An unusual case comes up for Letherbridge’s favourite police officer, Rob Hollins (Chris Walker) this week when he comes across a homeless man known only as Otter (Richard Sutton) who is walking towards the police station from an industrial estate.
It soon becomes clear Otter is in a pretty bad way. He is quite bruised and jumpy. But what exactly has happened to him?
Rob manages to coax Otter into the station where Dr. Emma (Reid Dido Miles) puts him through a thorough examination. But it turns out Otter has something of a tale to tell, as he claims to have been attacked by killer robots. He is keen to get the word out so that others can be warned of the dangers.
After some further investigation, Rob fills Emma in on Otter’s story. Otter was once a successful plumber. The problems began when he started leaving notes in people’s toilets warning them that the CIA had infiltrated the sewer system.
Otter was known to the authorities: he was seen as delusional and paranoid, but mostly harmless. Mental health workers had tried many times to provide help for him and to get him off the streets. But Otter prefers to live outside.
Emma and Rob are keen to find some sort of solution to the Otter problem but suspect nothing can really be done.
But why was Otter so bruised today? Had someone assaulted him?
