EastEnders’ Dot Cotton actress June Brown died in April at the age of 95 having enjoyed a staggering acting career. In the BBC soap, Dot was living in Ireland away from Walford whenever she was mentioned within the script. In recent scenes, Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy) received a phone call saying her grandmother had passed away and funeral plans were put into action.
However, fans were left baffled when Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty) was present at Dot Cotton’s coffin saying goodbye with the rest of the family.
Taking to their Twitter accounts, many fans questioned their relation with one user asking: “How is Whitney related to Dot?
“I didn’t know they had that much to do with each other, so that final scene from today’s episode has really confused me.”
Jenny Sturgess added: “How is Whitney that close to Dot? #EastEnders.”
@pennymores said: “Not sure why Whitney is there? Have I missed a family connection somewhere?”
Jack Denning expressed: “Whitney’s relation to Dot? Long lost dog sitter? I am confused as to why she is there.”
Trying to educate social media users on their relationship, one Twitter user explained: “Whitney is Bianca’s stepdaughter, Bianca’s mum is Carol and Jim was her dad and obv Jim was married to Dot.
“So Whitney is kinda a great stepdaughter.”
@Connor55452873 added: “Bianca and Sonia are sisters Bianca is Whitney’s adoptive mother, plus Dot majorly help Whitney when she was going through the stuff with Tony.” (sic)
Bianca Jackson (Pasty Palmer) and mother Carol Jackson (Lindsey Coulson) were regular fixtures on the show.
Carol was the daughter of Jim Branning (John Bardon) from his first marriage before he went on to marry Dot.
Whitney is the adoptive daughter of Bianca and has been part of the family since she was four years old.
Despite Whitney not being her biological daughter, Bianca didn’t treat her any differently than her other children and referred to herself as Whitney’s mother.
The scenes which took place are leading up to the sad scenes which are set to air next week, as Walford comes together to say goodbye to the iconic character.
During the huddle around the coffin, Sonia burst into tears and sobbed: “I’m not ready to say goodbye.”
Watching the scenes unfold, fans were left in tears, with @sharonstacey tweeting: “That last scene was devastatingly good, not ready for next week #EastEnders.”
@WhovianLife praised: “I have to say, big applause for @bbceastenders making the ending of each episode about Dot have either no sound or respectful music and not the duff duffs, tonight’s episode was a great example. #EastEnders”
Cody Coverdale added: “Going to be an emotional wreck watching the funeral next week #EastEnders.”
@ekitchener97 claimed: “Dot’s funeral episode is gonna be one of saddest episodes this year. #EastEnders.” (sic)
