EastEnders star Jessie Wallace might be a cast favourite in the BBC soap, but she has a 'deep regret' over an incident that saw her reprimanded at work.
Jessie, 52, is known for her long-running role as Kat Slater, but while her feisty character never shies away from a confrontation and has made some questionable decisions over the years, it was her real life that sparked a rift with show bosses.
Last summer, Jessie was cautioned for allegedly assaulting a police officer outside a nightclub in Bury St Edmunds – just months after Jessie had become a grandmother for the first time in March that year – and the TV star accepted a conditional police caution as a result.
However, she then had to face the consequences at work, too, as EastEnders bosses called her in for a meeting about what had happened and gave her a stern warning.
A BBC spokesperson said at the time: "Senior bosses have spoken to Jessie Wallace about the incident and issued a clear warning that this kind of behaviour is unacceptable and Jessie has expressed her deep regret."
Jessie had been arrested for the suspected assault and for being drunk and disorderly after attending a Madness gig in Thetford Forest, and then ending up in Bury St Edmunds.
She and a companion were said to have been seen arguing with police outside of a nightclub, leading to the arrest.
A police statement about the incident read: "A 50-year-old woman was arrested early on Sunday morning in St Andrew's Street, Bury St Edmunds, on suspicion of assaulting a police officer / drunk and disorderly conduct and was released without charge after receiving a conditional caution."
Accepting a conditional caution means signing documents admitting to details of an offence.
Jessie's role as Kat in EastEnders has included some tumultuous rows with the rest of the Slater family and her ex Alfie Moon (Shane Richie), with her character currently in a relationship with Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden).
But in her personal life, things have been stormy too at times – in 2020, she was suspended from EastEnders for two months over an "incident while filming".
She also faced a suspension from the soap in 2003 when her partying off screen hit the headlines too many times and in the same year was given a three-year driving ban for drink driving.
