Annette Badland might have infuriated us all thanks to her (frankly batshit) turn as Babe Smith in EastEnders, but the actress has revealed that the enthusiasm for her character sometimes turned a little too sour.
Aunt Babe was the misunderstood villain of the piece until her exit last year – and she was so villainous, in fact, that Annette has revealed she received “threats” from fans of the soap.
Speaking to Women’s Weekly, Annette conceded that EastEnders viewers “hated” her character – “but they love to hate me,” she added.
“I’ve had threats – I had to involve the police. It’s a dangerous old business being in a soap!” she added.
Opening up about Aunt Babe’s motivations for being downright evil, Annette suggested the unofficial Carter matriarch was horrible because of past “pain”.
“I always said she was a horrible character, but it comes from somewhere – pain, hurt, rejection and not being loved,” she said.
It’s not all bad playing such a notorious villain, though. Earlier this year, Annette admitted it was “great” to have played someone who had “such an impact” on viewers.
“People always seem a bit scared at first,” she said. “They’re like, ‘Oooh, it’s Aunt Babe’. And after they actually speak to me, they’re like, ‘Oh, she’s actually Annette and she’s posh!'”
EastEnders continues tonight at 7.30pm on BBC One.
