You’ll be seeing a lot less of the above when Emmerdale returns from its production break as social distancing guidelines means that heavy contact scenes – or anything that requires actors to be within two metres of each other such as a classic soap slap – will not be on the agenda.
However, that doesn’t mean there won’t be a continuation of Belle Dingle’s (Eden Taylor-Draper) story with Jamie Tate (Andrea Nightingale) or potentially some outlandish sexy times for Nicola and Jimmy King (Nicola Wheeler and Nick Miles) – we will just have to, uhh, use our imaginations a bit more.
Show boss Jane Hudson told us: ‘We have lots of looks of intent. Edging towards stairs. Arriving back with shirts tucked in. Fights replaced with menace. Things picked up in a menacing ways. We’re finding ways to do it.
‘Some stories we might hold back a little but we have got a storyline coming up – we’re too far in to change it. It’s going to challenge how we make it work but it’s our job to make it work. It’s our most challenging area that’s for sure.’
There has been a lot of work planning and ensuring everyone is safe to resume filming – and the executive producer hopes fans will be impressed by the results.
She shared: ‘I hope you will be amazed how little you notice that they are two metres apart. There are some clever camera tricks involved. There’s a lot of choreography on the set so the actors all work around each other.
‘There will be little moments where you might expect a hug and they don’t but I’ve been on set the whole time and the end result amazed me. The director is just a genius – I am not quite sure how he did it.’
So long as the show’s team is safe and we keep the Emmerdale drama coming, we’re sure we can live without sloppy smooching and the odd scrap.
