Laurel Thomas (played by Charlotte Bellamy) was left in disbelief on Tuesday’s instalment of Emmerdale when her partner Jai Sharma (Chris Bisson) confessed to scamming her out of £50,000 by using her name on a loan application. While Jai could try and explain he was in a desperate situation with his finance, it may be too late for Laurel to forgive him. Will she exit the ITV soap after breaking it off with Jai following his deceit?

On Tuesday’s episode, Laurel was looking for a card to give to Rishi Sharma (Bhasker Patel) when she was interrupted by Bernice Blackstock (Samantha Giles) who revealed Jai was trying to get her evicted.

A confused Laurel replied: “What? No, he wouldn’t do anything like that.”

Bernice fumed: “He went to Kim and told her she shouldn’t sell Laurel’s place as it would be much easier to kick me out and sell mine.”

Laurel thought there had to be some kind of mistake, but Bernice was adamant Jai wanted to evict her and assumed she was part of the businessman’s scheming.

Later on, Laurel discovered there was a problem with her credit rating and the bank informed her she’d taken out a “massive loan”.

She was convinced a scammer had stolen her identity to get the loan which left her feeling both concerned and extremely annoyed.

Laurel was worried she and her children would be evicted if she couldn’t sort out her financial matters in time.

When Jai returned home from visiting Rishi in hospital Laurel explained she had “bigger problems” going on.

“Someone’s trying to swindle me out of thousands of pounds,” she fumed.

Jai looked alarmed and simply replied: “What?”

“I applied for the mortgage application and the bank called me straight back and apparently I’ve taken a massive loan out,” Laurel explained.

“Well, I didn’t know what they were talking about a first.”

Jai said it “must be a mistake” and Laurel agreed but explained the bank had all the details of the loan.

“It seems like someone has stolen my identity,” she added while wracking her brains over the situation.

Jai assured her that banks have checks in place to stop identity theft, but Laurel snapped to tell him “they are obviously not working”.

“Jai, this could ruin me. I’m going to call the police, I have been robbed,” she raged.

“If I’d been burgled I’d get them in and I could lose a lot more through this.”

A worried Jai warned Laurel not to call the police and advised her to give the bank a “few days to sort it out”.

Laurel decided to clear her head by going for a walk and when she returned Jai explained to her he’d handle the issue.

“I’ve decided I am going to get the police involved and I’m going to call them,” she told Jai.

However, Jai warned her not to call them and then admitted he was the person who took out the loan.

Although he confessed to scamming her, could it be too late for Laurel to forgive him? Will she decide to leave Emmerdale altogether to start a new life without Jai and his lies?

Emmerdale airs weekdays on ITV at 7pm.
