A posh hotel in Newcastle for a night of passion with Liam (Jonny McPherson) or sitting at home with Bob (Tony Audenshaw) watching Hound of the Baskervilles on telly were the options facing Wendy (Susan Cookson) in Monday (July 24)’s Emmerdale.
She chose the former, but once at the hotel she didn’t even get as far as taking her jacket off before she realised she’d made a huge mistake. She told Liam that their affair was over. A crestfallen Liam said he wanted a proper relationship with her. ‘I can see myself loving you,’ he said.
Wendy replied that true love was what she had with Bob, and that she adores him. She booked herself another room to stay the night, planning to return to Bob the next morning.
Sadly for her this realisation of Bob’s merits may come too late, because back in the village Bernice (Samantha Giles) had already told Bob that Wendy and Liam were having an affair.
Bernice and Nicola (Nicola Wheeler) had seen the doctor and nurse kissing in the allotment shed, so Bernice was pretty sure of her facts. Unwilling to believe her Bob said her accusations were ‘codswallop with added tripe’ and called her a ‘pathetic crow’ who was just trying to get her hands on him and his body.
A bit of detective work on his part soon confirmed that Bernice was telling the truth, and he was heartbroken.
Meanwhile, Wendy’s hectic love life was the hot topic between Bernice and Nicola, and when Laurel (Charlotte Bellamy) came in to the cafe Nicola soon filled her in on what had been going on.
‘Bernice wants to have it off with Bob, so she wants to tell him about Wendy and Liam having it off behind his back,’ she summarised. Laurel was less interested in this news than expected, what with having her heartbroken son (Alfie Clarke) to worry about, not to mention the fact that her dad had broken his hip and wouldn’t be coming to the wedding, and Jai (Chris Bisson) had banned his own dad from coming to the wedding for not being his dad and lying about it. She had a lot on her plate.
Nicola attempted to draw Laurel in to the conversation.
‘You did have that affair with Bob behind Brenda’s back,’ she reminded her friend. Frankly that is one Emmerdale love affair that we’ve tried to put behind us.
Brenda (Lesley Dunlop) revealed that she knew all about Bob and Laurel’s affair just hours after their wedding. Laurel and Bob tried to make a go of things after that, but it was never the easiest of relationships and probably one that Laurel would rather forget.
Wanting to change the subject Laurel asked Nicola, ‘How many affairs have you had?’
That’s never an easy calculation in soap land. ‘Does it count if your husband was in a coma?’ she asked. Bernice and Laurel confirmed it did. Nicola had sex with David Metcalfe (Matthew Wolfenden) while her husband Donald De Souza (Michael Jayston) was in a coma following a brain haemorrhage.
Bernice has, of course, had quite a colourful relationship history herself and at the end of the episode it seemed like she might be about to add a new name to her list.
Feeling guilty for having been so horrible to her earlier and sad about Wendy’s betrayal, Bob came to her door at the B&B with a glass of wine. As the two promised they’d always be there for each other, Bernice retreated back into the room but left the door slightly ajar – and we saw Bob hesitate outside, trying to decide whether to go in.
Is Wendy going to arrive back home and find that Bob has already moved on to Bernice?
And even if he manages to resist his business partner, will he ever be able to forgive Wendy?
