Emmerdale star Charley Webb 'quits after 19 years amid race row'

Charley Webb has quit Emmerdale after 19 years, it has been claimed.

The actress, who portrays Debbie Dingle, made her final appearance to date in the ITV serial drama at the beginning of the year.

Debbie had returned to the show as part of a huge Christmas twist, which saw her revealed to be Al Chapman’s mystery love interest.

But after getting wind of the fact that Al was engaged to Priya Kotecha (Fiona Wade) at the same time he was seeing her, she sought Priya’s help in staging the ultimate revenge plan, before departing the village once more.

The door was left open for the character to return in the future, especially given that she’d had had a colossal argument with mum Charity, but according to The Sun, actress Charley has now left the show.

‘Charley is closing the door on Emmerdale for good and won’t be going back,’ a source told the publication.

‘After she gave birth to her third child with Matthew in 2019 she returned briefly before taking some time out again.

‘The past few months have given her time to think about the future and it is one that doesn’t involve Emmerdale.’

‘Matthew being caught up in the row on set fuelled her decision to step away.

‘Charley has been on Emmerdale for 19 years and her character Debbie has had a rollercoaster ride. It’s time for a new adventure for Charley.

‘Naturally the door is open for her character, who is now living in Scotland, should she change her mind. But for now she is looking to the future.’

An Emmerdale spokesperson told the publication that there ‘are no current plans’ for Debbie to return to the show.

The claims come after Charley’s husband Matthew Wolfenden, who portrays David Metcalfe, returned to set following an alleged ‘race row’, which reportedly took place during the on-location shoot for the serial drama’s survival week.

An investigation was launched in the aftermath of the clash, and Matthew and co-star Isabel Hodgins were temporarily written out of the show, with a last-minute storyline seeing their characters jet off on holiday.

Aaron Antony, who portrays Ellis Chapman, has reportedly quit Emmerdale in the wake of the incident.

Charley, meanwhile, appeared to show support for Matthew earlier this week on social media.

The 33-year-old posted two pictures of Prince William on her Instagram Stories. From the top image, it appeared as if the Duke of Cambridge was giving the middle finger, but the second – taken from a different angle – revealed that he was actually holding up three fingers.

The image’s caption read: ‘see both sides’.

Charley added a heart emoji to the photo, writing: ‘Just going to leave this right here’.
