Marvel drops a new Eternals trailer, and eagle-eyed fans pick apart every frame. The exchange between studio and audience has almost become routine. As such, Marvel started catering to the obsessive analysis of their trailers, dropping hints and callbacks. One Avengers: Age of Ultron easter egg might have finally been unearthed, foreshadowing the Eternals almost six years ago.
‘Eternals’ and ‘Age of Ultron’ allegedly connect through 1 pivotal scene
Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch made a splash on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, using her powers to send various Avengers spiraling into nightmares and visions.
Chris Hemsworth’s Thor initially shrugged off her spell, saying that it failed to work on him. However, he quickly descended into disturbing images.
Visions of an unknown object crashing to Earth flashed before Thor’s eyes, causing a massive burst and tidal wave.
While these flashes and visions lasted split seconds in Age of Ultron, one Redditor noticed a very similar scene in the Eternals trailers.
Did Thor’s vision glimpse the Celestial’s ancient past or a grim possible future?
During the Eternals trailer, Ajak mentions ‘the emergence’ resulting from the Snap that brought everyone back in Avengers: Endgame. The imagery, however, resembles a possible creation montage of galaxies swirling into existence.
Ajak’s explanation leads to something colliding with Earth. This object could be the Celestials planting the seed of life on Earth — which included the Deviants.
“The Redditor noted just how similar the shot of a comet/asteroid/alien(?) crash-landing on Earth in the Eternals trailer is to an apocalyptic shot of a very similar object landing on Earth in Thor’s Age of Ultron vision,” Inverse reported.
Thor even stated he saw “A whirlpool that sucks in all hope of life.” This line adds even more evidence to the theory, as an accompanying shot in the Eternals trailer shows a massive swirl of water swallowing landmasses.
“Avengers: Endgame proved, once and for all, just how good Marvel Studios is at setting up story points only to reveal the pay-offs to those narrative seeds years later. So it’s definitely possible that this presumed connection between Eternals and Avengers: Age of Ultron was done intentionally,” Inverse noted.
Does the ‘Eternals’ and ‘Age of Ultron’ easter egg theory hint at the Celestials or something else?
Weighing the evidence does appear to support that the Eternals trailer included an Age of Ultron easter egg.
However, during Thor’s visions, immediately preceding the glimpse of the object crashing into Earth, Ultron utters the word “extinction,” followed by a shot of Tony Stark and then the collision.
Thor’s vision likely alluded to Ultron’s plans to create an asteroid impact with Sokovia. Ultron’s actions resulted from Tony’s actions, linking him as well. However, it could just serve as a glimpse at the meteorite that rendered the dinosaurs extinct.
While the timeline of The Eternals spanning from the universe’s creation to modern-day, the trailers’ shots could occur virtually any time in history. It could show the Celestials planting life on Earth — or attempting to end it.
However, Marvel has shown its willingness to indulge overanalyzing fans. As The Eternals’ release date approaches, fan speculation ramps up about what such massive cosmic characters could mean for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
