Firefly Lane is on Netflix now and the series climbed to the top of the streaming platform’s top 10. The series is based on the novel by Kristin Hannah and it tells the story of best friends Tully Hart (played by Katherine Heigl) and Kate Mularkey (Sarah Chalke). Young Tully is played by Ali Skovbye, and she opened up about her most tragic scene.

How did Young Tully star approach filming her sexual assault scene?

The emotional series includes a number of flashbacks that show how Tully and Kate’s friendship develops over the years.

The pair met when they were 14 after Tully moved close to Kate, and they were inseparable ever since.

Tully’s mother Cloud (Beau Garrett) was a drug addict, which means Tully was forced to raise herself and she grew up too fast.

In the second episode, Tully was raped during a high school party by an older student.

This was one of the first times viewers got to see the kind of continuous trauma the young woman had experienced.

Actress Skovbye said she had been drawn to young Tully’s tragic past as it acted as a new opportunity to address topics like sexual assault.

Speaking to Refinery29, the 18-year-old actress said: “As challenging as it can be to take on that harder subject matter, I think it’s also really, really important that we continue to do that.

“What our story does so well is showing that you can be popular and be considered ‘cool,’ whatever it may be, and still go through something like this.”

Skovbye had the support of an intimacy co-ordinator when she was filming the scene.

She was in her senior year of high school at the time, and she said the co-ordinator felt like a mother to her on set.

Intimacy co-ordinators are becoming an essential part of filming sex scenes, and they were used in the Netflix hit series, Bridgerton.

She said co-ordinator Amanda Cutting had been pivotal during the particularly challenging days.

The young star described the scene as being choreographed like a dance, and it was “caring and considerate”.

There were very specific details involved so the scene could be carried out safely and modestly.

After the ordeal, Tully opens up to her friend Kate and the young actress said it was important to help people not feel alone.

Fans sympathised with young Tully and they found themselves getting emotional over her difficult experiences.

The star warned people to be kind to others as you never know what other people are going through in their lives.

In the series, flashbacks show how Tully had to come to terms with the sexual assault without her mother there.

She was also having to get through some of the most difficult years of her teenage life without a role model.

The message resonated with many fans and they fell in love with Tully’s complex character as a result.

The actress is on Instagram and she has more than 87,000 followers who have been praising her for her portrayal of Tully.

She shared some photos of herself as the teenager, with the message: “I’m so incredibly proud to be apart of a show about two strong badass women.”

Her fans congratulated her when the series landed on the top spot of Netflix’s top 10 most-watched series.

One fan said: “Great job with the harrowing rape scene. The camera loves you, you get the nuance of Tully’s bravado covering her vulnerability.”
