Strictly Come Dancing 2021 winner Giovanni Pernice brought professional dancer turned judge Anton du Beke on a tour of Sicily as part of their BBC travel programme. Giovanni, who was born on the Italian island, has described the series with his Strictly co-star as a “dream project”.
Giovanni will be returning to screens after being eliminated from this year’s series of Strictly Come Dancing in week two with his partner Richie Anderson.
The 32-year-old dancer and Anton spent six years together as colleagues battling out on the ballroom dance floor before the latter joined the judging panel.
Anton has permanently replaced judge Bruno Tonioli and scores the celebrity contestants alongside Shirley Ballas, Motsi Mabuse and Craig Revel Horwood.
Giovanni and Anton have spent some quality time together away from the show for their series Anton and Giovanni: Adventures in Sicily.
Anton was shown around the beautiful island of Sicily by Giovanni who revisited places from his childhood and treated the judge to delights only a local can show a visitor.
When they were not exploring sights and enjoying Italian cuisine, the pair showed off their dancing skills.
Giovanni said: “To say this has been a dream project is an understatement.
“Taking Anton to my much-loved home of Sicily was simply bellissima.
“We danced, we laughed and had the time of our lives – with great culture, food and company.”
He said he cannot wait for viewers to come on the journey with him and Anton, adding: “See you in the Sicilian sun! Ciao.”
His co-star Anton added: “When I first heard about this trip it was pretty irresistible. What’s not to love?
“It’s all my favourite things, great food, great country and spending time in the sunshine with Giovanni. Marvellous!”
Anton has been part of the Strictly Come Dancing team since the show launched in 2004, whereas Giovanni joined in 2015.
The duo have toured together as part of their Him and Me show in recent years.
Creative Director for the BBC Mel Balac said: “Viewers will get to see Anton and Gio in a completely different light as we follow them on their road trip across Sicily.”
She continued: “Alongside seeing the boys enjoy and experience everything that Sicily has to offer, viewers will also see their amazing friendship grow as they learn new things about one another, including some things that they would probably rather not let anyone know.”
Giovanni spent his childhood growing up in Sicily before moving to Bologna at the age of 14 when he started taking dancing more seriously.
He won last year’s series of Strictly Come Dancing with EastEnders actress Rose Ayling-Ellis.
Anton and Giovanni: Adventures in Sicily is coming to BBC One and the BBC iPlayer in 2023.
Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday at 6.30pm on BBC One.
