The One Show: Chris Pratt talks about Guardians of the Galaxy music
Next month, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 will hit cinemas and finish off the stories of James Gunn’s galactic heroes. But when the Marvel director originally signed on to helm the third film in the series, he found himself facing an extra hero he didn’t expect: Thor. As a result, he was not sure how he was going to resolve this story issue.

Fans may recall at the end of Avengers Endgame, Thor flew off into space with the Guardians of the Galaxy, teaming up as what the God of Thunder called the Asgardians of the Galaxy.
When Gunn saw this, he recently told Rolling Stone, he worried about how to handle the hero.
“[Marvel] chose to have that ending in editing,” Gunn revealed. “And I didn’t think it was gonna be in there. Endgame came out right after I decided to do Guardians again. So I didn’t have much say in what was in Endgame.”
As a result, he was left panicked over how he would change the narrative ideas he already had written down. The director added that he asked: “What the f**k am I gonna do?”
Thankfully, Gunn recalled, Kevin Feige (the President of Marvel Studios) pulled him aside and had a word with him.
He revealed that the overarching MCU writers had already figured out how to get Thor out of the way of the Guardians’ story.
Gunn recalled Feige telling him: “Taika’s gonna do Thor, and we’ll have the Guardians in it.” The American director replied: “Thank God!”

Gunn assured fans: “To be completely honest, Thor was never going to be in this movie. Taika took a bullet for me. Because I was not going to have him in. I was just gonna start up and there’s no Thor.”
As it turned out, Thor: Love and Thunder began with the Guardians of the Galaxy flying off into space to find Gamora, so they didn’t even really interact with one another much.
Gunn likely didn’t want to throw Thor into the mix because he has revealed who he planned to focus on in the third and final Guardians of the Galaxy movie.
In a recent interview, Gunn said the movie is not the story of Peter Quill / Star-Lord, but instead another member of the team, Rocket.
Gunn explained: “The most important thing for me was Rocket’s story, and then, following that, everybody else.”
The 56-year-old director went on to say that Rocket is the “secret protagonist” of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.
“[He] has always been the centre of it for me,” he said. “And this is really fulfilling that.”
He followed up to add: “I really felt like Rocket’s story needed to be told. And it was left hanging after Vol 2.”
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 hits cinemas on May 5.
Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 are available to stream on Disney Plus now.
