Last Friday, Strictly fans watched as a new batch of celebrities were put into their dancing matches for the duration of the series. However, Countryfile star Helen Skelton revealed when it came to the live shows on Saturday night, she tried to flee the studio.
The new series of Strictly Come Dancing is well underway as fans watched the 15 stars take to the dancefloor for the first time on Saturday night.
With scores going as high as 34 in the first week, many viewers were left impressed with the high level of skill and talent in the show already.
However, BBC star Helen Skelton revealed that ahead of the first live show she had a breakdown after trying to escape the studio.
Speaking on her Radio 5 Live show, she said: “I had a little cry. I’m normally cool, calm and collected.
“I got on the dance floor and they said, ‘When the audience come in…’ and I went, ‘Oh crikey, yeah, there’s people’.”
“I was like, ‘There’s a fire door, there, I can get out of it,’ and I did! Gorka found me and said, ‘What are you doing?’
“I said, ‘Just having a minute.’ I literally ran. It was like when I did Celeb SAS, I tried to escape that.”
Despite Helen saying she’s really enjoying being part of the BBC show, she continued to add that the lack of personal space is odd for her.
Helen added: “I don’t want to sound ungrateful, but it’s very weird. Personal space? You wave goodbye to that.
“Boundaries are non-existent. You walk in and they go, ‘Do you want a fake tan?’ Before you know it you’re naked with a load of people spraying you.”
Although she tried to flee, Helen and Gorka managed to successfully perform the American Smooth to You Send Me by Aretha Franklin.
Impressing the judges, Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, Shirley Ballas and Anton Du Beke, Helen and her partner managed to get a total score of 26.
This puts the Countryfile star sixth on the leaderboard with Will Mellor and Hamza Yassin taking the top spot with a score of 34 each.
On the bottom end of the scale, football legend Tony Adams and his professional partner Katya Jones are currently in last place with a score of 15.
However, these rankings could all change as their scores after their routines next week will be added to what they received during the first live show.
Helen was the final celebrity revealed when the Strictly line-up was announced back at the start of August.
Ahead of joining the show, she told BBC: “I’m really excited to get stuck into a fun adventure.
“My family and friends have always loved the show and can’t wait for me to get started.”
Strictly Come Dancing continues this Saturday on BBC One at 6:30pm
