Outlander season 7 episode 8 trailer
WARNING: This article contains spoilers from season 7 of Outlander and the Outlander novels by Diana Gabaldon
Season seven, part one of Outlander has now wrapped up with no more new episodes of the Starz epic fantasy drama in 2023.
Although fans will be now dealing with the Droughtlander, they still have plenty of questions about the historical series.
Episode eight, which marked the midseason finale, saw Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan) and his wife Claire (Caitríona Balfe) going to comfort his relative Simon Fraser (Angus MacFadyen) in his hour of need.
How is Jamie Fraser related to Simon Fraser in Outlander?
As Jamie explained to Claire earlier in season seven, his relative wasn’t Simon Fraser, 11th Lord of Lovat (Clive Russell) – who was his grandfather – or his son (James Parris) for this matter.

Instead, Jamie and Simon Fraser are distant cousins with the pair reminiscing about their childhood days in the midseason finale.
Simon Fraser of Balnain is a second cousin Jamie as the son of Alexander Fraser of Balnain.
Despite fighting on different sides of the American Revolutionary War, the pair were still kin and shared an affinity.

Jamie is of course a fictional character and in Outlander he is related to the real-life 11th Lord of Lovat
In the context of real history, the Frasers of Balnain were given lands from the Lord Lovat, Hugh Fraser.
Simon Fraser and Hugh Fraser were kin and also related to the Frasers of Balnain, with the family bestowing lands upon Hugh Fraser of Balnain.
Both the Frasers of Lovat and the Frasers of Balnain share a common ancestry despite being separate clans.
Hugh Fraser of Balnain’s grandson was Simon Fraser of Balnain.
