Here’s why Joe Sugg is called ThatcherJoe on his YouTube channel

Joe Sugg has cultivated a dedicated following through YouTube and now his appearance on mainstream TV – BBC’s goliath hit Strictly Come Dancing – is sure to send his subscriber numbers rocketing.

Before carving out a name for himself on the video blogging site, the 27-year-old was predominantly known as Zoella’s younger brother.

His famous sister started her account in February 2009, which quickly became a popular hit for viewers and has since received over 540million total visits.

Joe started his own account in 2012 after making a number of cameos in his sister’s videos.

He also has a number of close friends in the YouTuber community including Caspar Lee, who he lives with in his London flat.

Why is Joe known as ThatcherJoe on YouTube?

Joe named his account ‘ThatcherJoe’ while training as a roof thatcher.

After a number of questions from fans about his YouTube name, he opened up about his training in a video on October 25 2013.

Speaking to his fans in the video, he explained: "A lot of you ask me, ‘Joe, why are you called ThatcherJoe?’ Well, believe it or not, I am an apprentice roof thatcher. If you don’t know what that means it means I’m learning to become a person who makes roofs out of straw."

He went on to reveal that he first realised that this could be the career for him when he was in Year 10 and had to do work experience with his uncle, who was a roof thatcher.

After a week working with him, his uncle asked him whether he wanted to continue working with him on Saturdays, which he agreed to.

Joe went on to do his A-Levels but rather than go to university, Joe decided to become an apprentice roof thatcher.

Is Joe Sugg still a roof thatcher?

No. Joe later decided to focus on his YouTube career.

In May 2018, Joe filmed a video explaining the name of his channel – saying that his "old job" used to be as a roof thatcher.

He also revealed that he returned to see his uncle, who had been the one to teach him about thatching in the first place.

Around that time he had received an email from Clarence House, who had wanted him to speak about his old career for the Prince’s Foundation and met with Prince Charles.

Who is Joe’s partner Dianne on Strictly?

Dianne Buswell is an Australian ballroom dancer who appeared on So You Think You Can Dance? in Oz.

She joined Australia’s Dancing With The Stars in 2015 and was paired with Australian AFL star Jude Bolton.

Dianne later appeared on Strictly in 2017 and was partnered up with Reverend Richard Coles, but were the second couple to be eliminated in the competition.

The dancer also appeared in Strictly’s Children in Need special with Tim Vincent that same year.
