I'm A Celebs fans compare Rita Simons' underwater Bushtucker Trial with Roxy Mitchell's drowning death in EastEnders

The actress, who played Roxy Mitchell in the BBC One soap, was teamed up with Hollyoaks actor Malique Thompson-Dwyer as they battled against John Barrowman and Emily Atack in the water-themed challenge.

The winning duo were the ones who managed to fill up the opposing team's tank with water, securing themselves a place in Noel Edmonds' empire.

But fans at home were more distracted by the accidental homage to Rita's Walford alter ego's death.

Roxy tragically died on New Year's Day last year alongside her sister, Ronnie Mitchell.

The pair drowned in a swimming pool on Ronnie's wedding day – with the scenes, and the characters' deaths, sparking a mixed reaction from fans at the time.

Taking to Twitter during tonight's episode, fans couldn't help but point out link between Rita's trial and Roxy's death – with Rita even admitting to her campmates that she "isn't good with water".

One viewer wrote: "Roxy Mitchell drown in a swimming pool. I’m not surprised Rita is scared of this trial. Probs got PTSD."

Another quipped: "Rita- I’m not good with water, yeah we remember Roxy, we remember."

A third tweeted: "Hope this goes better than Roxy Mitchell's last trip underwater."

Rita managed to avoid being submerged underwater as her teammate Malique took charge of the diving responsibilities.

As their tanks started to fill up the celebrities were joined by snakes, crocodiles and other creatures – and Rita still managed to stay remarkably calm, with she and Malique going on to win the challenge.
