SPOILERS for this week have confirmed that Sean Tully is set for a shocking discovery about his boyfriend Laurence.

While the new Coronation Street storyline takes shape, it's time to consider finally giving him the love he deserves.

Rocking up the ITV cobbles in the early noughties, Antony Cotton will celebrate two full decades on our screens on July 13, 2023 – the date of his first ever appearance on the Street.

The struggling Underworld machinist became a series regular a year later, which was perhaps one of Corrie's best moves.

As far as I can remember, Sean has always been one of my favourite characters.

A long-term lodger and surrogate son to Sue Cleaver's Eileen Grimshaw, Sean is a great balance of fierceness and kindness – the perfect personality for a deeply lovable character.

In my eyes, Sean wears the purest of hearts on his sleeve and always strives to do good around him, albeit clumsily, and deserves the best.

So here's my question to Corrie bosses – why isn't he getting it?

For years, fans of the Manchester-based soap have watched Sean jump from one unstable and unbalanced relationship to another.

Sadly, the outcome was always the same as our beloved machinist and barman ended up heartbroken, even traumatised and still living on the breadline.

Many will remember Leon who refused to give Sean a chance because of his exuberantpersonality, while others may recall how Marcus sadly discarded him for Maria Connor.

Coronation Street vicar Billy Mayhew even turned Sean away, although he was ready to give him the world.

Even in friendship, Sean proved himself to be one of the most loyal and considerate residents in Weatherfield.

How could we forget the time he accepted sleeping rough to allow Fiz Stape to have her independence, after almost acting as a maid for her and taking care of both Hope and Ruby?

How can we neglect Sean impregnating his friend Violet Wilson to help her have the family she desperately wanted?

In all his years in Weatherfield, Sean has given the world and gone above and beyond for everybody – sp why has nobody done the same for him?

Things seemed to turn around when viewers were introduced to Frank, who quickly became Sean's new boyfriend in 2022.

However, AGAIN, Sean had to send him packing after catching him disrespecting his son Dylan and Frank was even revealed to be a bully.

But once again, the future seemed bright for Sean when he was met with Laurence Reeves, played by Robert Shaw Cameron.

With the firm intention of treating Sean to the abundant life he deserved and a job as a successful dentist, hunky Laurence seemed like the perfect fit for him… until Corrie ruined it.

Some may understand my frustration when Laurence was caught kissing Sean's pal Todd Grimshaw.

And the feeling only grew when reading about this week's upcoming drama.

Viewers will know that Todd and his mother Eileen are set to find out Laurence has a dark past and could even be responsible for his wife's death.

To make matters worse, Sean could even be in mortal danger as Laurence's true colours are revealed.

In short, everything says it's all about to end in heartbreak for Sean.

Mainstream media has often struggled to show happy, gay or lesbian couples jump through the hurdles life may throw at them.

While some simply call it quits in tear-jerking scenes where one party may realise they haven't figured themselves out completely, others fall victim to the Bury Your Gays trope.

The trope has been haunting queer TV for decades, as seen most recently with Killing Eve's infuriating ending, and consists of killing off any LGBTQI+ character.

Why can't Coronation Street set another trend in which its most iconic gay and camp character finds love?

Drama and heartbreak are the norm in Corrie, making it understandable that Sean can't have a forever peaceful routine in the cobbles.

But giving him the partnership he has always wanted would not only make his fans happy, it could also pave the way for more LGBTQI+-friendly storylines.

Why isn't Sean, like Billy Mayhew with Summer Spellman, allowed to experience the joys of having his own family with another half?

Many gay and lesbian couples off-screen, who sometimes still struggle and desperately wish to have children, could relate to the journey and the audience boost would only be beneficial for Coronation Street.

Why isn't Sean allowed to walk down the aisle with his perfect match like Daisy Midgeley and why can't he have a former flame chasing after him upon realising how much of a catch he is?

It's 2023 and definitely time to allow our queer, gay and camp characters to live their best lives in soapland – Emmerdale proved it could be done with Vanessa Woodfield and Charity Dingle and fans like me are still ready for more.
