HORTICULTURALIST Monty Don has shared a big update on the progress of the fruit and veg growing in his vegetable patch and greenhouse, which has left fans green with envy.
Monty, 68, stars in the BBC 2 series Gardener’s World, which airs from spring to autumn. He often shows off his incredible vegetable garden on the show, but is not sharing even more of it on social media.
This week on Instagram he has shared pictures of peaches ripening in his greenhouse, a seriously large collection of chilli plants gathering steam, and his already harvested tomato crop.
His fans marvelled at the progress of his peaches and chillies, but were absolutely furious at the state of his tomatoes.
Monty posted a snap of his homegrown tomatoes and updated his fans on where they were headed next. “Tomato sauce time. We grow a lot of tomatoes and the majority are roasted and frozen ready for the simplest and best sauce for pasta even in the depths of winter,” he wrote.
Green with envy, one fan commented: “How come yours have ripened so well? Most of ours are still green!!”

“I have tomato envy, because ours are still green,” another fan piled on.
A third said: “I’ve got loads of green tomatoes that just don’t want to ripen! Maybe just a few more weeks.”
While a fourth added: “I’m so jealous of this, I currently have 2 that are ripening”
“I haven’t even had one ripen yet,” a fifth fan noted sadly.

Monty also posted a shot of his “sunlit” veg garden on Tuesday after it has been hit with 24 hours of rain.
But seeing his luscious green veg had the same effect on fans.
“How come everything gets eaten in my veg garden by rabbits, squirrels, with caterpillars on most things? Yet all your produce looks perfect. We are in the countryside on the edge of fields too,” one replied.
“All mine is firmly in the belly of slugs and snails,” a second fan added.
Perhaps the secret to Monty’s garden success is that it’s a team effort, since he often has his canine pals Ned, Nell and Patti out helping him.
Though his Yorkshire Terrier Patti is rarely seen on the BBC show these days, Monty says she puts in just as much effort as the other two but is usually out of sight because she’s scared of camera tripods. “She hates the tripods because one fell on her during lockdown,” he explained.
“That is why you always see me holding her. When the cameras are not here, she is out with me all the time.”
