Holly Willoughby has announced that she has quit This Morning, following a rather tumultuous year at the helm of the ITV daytime show.

The TV presenter, who had worked on the show for 14 years, shared the news on her Instagram page, where she told fans: "I have let ITV know today that after 14 years, I will not be returning to This Morning.

"To everyone who has ever worked on the show over the years, thank you so much. This is such a difficult goodbye, you are incredible and I forever will be proud of what we’ve done together.

"Thank you to everyone at ITV for being supportive. To every guest who has sat on our sofa, thank you."

It comes after a rather awful year for Holly, and the show itself, with the star most recently facing an alleged plot to "kidnap and murder" her.

Gavin Plumb appeared at Chelmsford Magistrates Court on Friday, 6 October, charged with soliciting to commit murder and incitement to commit kidnap. Essex Police confirmed they arrested the suspect on Wednesday evening, and he was charged on Friday morning.

Holly, who was said to be 'distraught' when she learned of the allegations, was given a 24-hour police guard to protect her.

Following the news of the horrific plot, Holly was absent from This Morning, and it was reported that she would not be returning to TV for the "foreseeable future."

Holly hit headlines earlier this year, when her former This Morning co-star and former best friend Phillip Schofield sensationally quit the morning show, following which he admitted to an "unwise but not illegal" affair with a much younger runner on the show.

Ahead of Phillip's resignation from the show, and ITV as a whole, there had been rumours of a feud brewing between the once-close friends, and Holly was said to have been left "blindsided" by the affair revelations, which both claimed Phillip had previously denied when she'd asked about the rumours.

The former co-stars feud appeared to continue following this with Phillip unfollowing Holly on Instagram, although the pair are now believed to be talking again after Phillip reached out to express his horror at the alleged murder plot.

Holly and Phillip sparked controversy last year following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, when they were accused of "jumping the queue" at her lying-in-state in a scandal that was then dubbed "queue-gate".

Following the accusations, Holly denied that she and Phillip had cut the queue in a VT on This Morning, while the programme also issued a statement saying the pair were they for work purposes.

However, despite the pair's denial a petition was later started to have them fired from the show.
