Since its return, Lethal Weapon has been one of the most popular cop shows on television. Conceived as a reboot of the iconic 80’s action movie series that starred Mel Gibson in his breakout role and Danny Glover as his long-suffering partner, the Lethal Weapon series became a fan favorite shortly after the premiere episode.
However, the show has been plagued with drama since the beginning, and fans are starting to wonder what will become of the hit show and whether it will be renewed for a fourth season.
What happened to’Lethal Weapon’ so far?
The show debuted in September 2016 and starred Clayne Crawford as Martin Riggs, the role Mel Gibson originated, and Marlon Wayans as Roger Murtaugh, the Danny Glover role. Riggs was the loose cannon cop and Murtaugh was the older, world-weary partner. Together, the two battled shady characters and conspiracies in a setting that perfectly combined comedy and drama. The first two seasons were quite popular, and fans had no reason to suspect that anything untoward was happening behind the scenes.
However, in May 2018, Clayne Crawford was unceremoniously fired from the show, after reports surfaced that he had behaved belligerently on the set of the series. After the firing, there were multiple headlines that claimed there had been a long-standing feud between Crawford and Wayans, with bad blood on both sides, which culminated in the firing of Crawford several months before the third season was set to debut.
Damon Wayans threatens to quit
After Clayne Crawford was fired in May 2018, there was a fast and frantic search for a replacement actor. Seann William Scott was cast in an entirely new role, a CIA operative named Wesley Cole. The third season premiered in September 2018 and enjoyed generally decent ratings, although it was never quite able to measure up to the success of the first season.
While Lethal Weapon bosses were able to scramble to fill Crawford’s role, all was still not well on the set. Recently, lead actor Damon Wayans revealed that he is seriously considering leaving the show. In a December interview, Wayans said that after the 13 episodes set for the third season, he would be leaving the show for a number of reasons – mainly, in order to focus on his health (Wayans has admitted to being diabetic) and to spend more time with his family. This announcement seemed to be a surprise to everyone, including the producers of Lethal Weapon.
According to recent reports, Fox network bosses scrambled to work out an arrangement that would allow Wayans to stay, including rearranging the filming schedule to give him more time to rest.
Will there be a fourth season of ‘Lethal Weapon’?
So will the renovated show schedule and accommodations made for Wayans mean that the show will continue? No formal announcement has been made one way or another, and it seems like fans might be kept in the dark for some time yet.
In a recent interview with executive producer Matt Miller, he revealed that since Wayans’ hours changed to allow him more time to rest, he has enjoyed working on the show. Plus, Miller said there is a solid plan and plot line in place for a possible fourth season, which he is quite excited about.
Even with the hints and possibilities, the fourth season of Lethal Weapon remains hypothetical. Fans of the hugely entertaining buddy cop show will be left waiting on the edge of their seats right up until the moment that the Fox network executives reveal the future of the show that many have grown to love.
