The Island with Bear Grylls viewers call out 'misogynistic' contestant Phil

This series of The Island with Bear Grylls has already had viewers complaining about the class divide, contestants allegedly bullying each other and a poorly-worded comment being made about another islander’s weight, and tonight’s episode (April 23) was no different.

The contestant that drew the ire of fans tonight was Phil from the team earning below the UK national average wage.

Throughout the episode, it looked like Phil and teammate Laura had some chemistry, but he annoyed both her and viewers by claiming that she shouldn’t help hunt a pig because he believed men were the only ones who hunted in prehistoric times.

People were quick to call him out on Twitter. Tweets contain strong language, by the way.

To be fair, Phil did apologise to Laura for his behaviour later on. She admitted to camera that she would miss him when the show was over, before actually agreeing to go on a date with him and having a snog.

Elsewhere in the episode, islander Sam had to be taken away for medical attention due to a huge laceration on his ear. Although initially worried he wouldn’t be allowed to return to the show, he did come back.

The Island with Bear Grylls continues next Monday (April 30) on Channel 4.
