Outlander will be coming back later this year with season seven hitting screens but many fans have been revisiting the previous books and seasons while they wait for the Droughtlander to end. One big plot point some fans are curious about is the stolen moment between Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan) and Laoghaire MacKenzie (Nell Hudson) in an alcove of Castle Leoch. Claire Fraser (Caitríona Balfe) unwittingly witnessed the moment between the couple and later tried to help Laoghaire secure the object of her affection Jamie.
Why did Jamie kiss Laoghaire in Outlander?
Addressing this tender moment – which appeared both in the first Outlander novel and season one – actor Heughan said Jamie was “absolutely tempted” by Laoghaire.
He went on to say the two characters had a “past history” prior to Claire showing up in the past.
The star went so far as to pity Laoghaire, whom he described as a “good girl” and said her jilted “young love” was “really sad”.
Adding to TV Line back in 2015: “Had Claire not turned up, he probably would have been with her and ended up with her.”
His words make sense as Claire completely changed the trajectory of Jamie’s life with the pair having an incomparable love.
Outlander’s author Diana Gabaldon also reflected on the kiss between Jamie and Laoghaire and said Claire accidentally happened to see the moment.
There was no intention on Jamie’s part to make Claire jealous as he was in an alcove with Laoghaire on the hopes of some privacy.
Gabaldon said at this point in the story Jamie had no reason to believe Claire had feelings for him, even though there was a palpable chemistry between the two of them.
The writer said Claire was an Englishwoman and therefore most likely a spy and working in league with the Redcoats, including the very soldiers who attacked him and his family.
Jamie even took a beating for Laoghaire, who was going to face a very public punishment in front of the residents of Castle Leoch for her.
But it appears Laoghaire’s feelings for Jamie were one-sided after he admitted he didn’t remember her from the last time he was at Castle Leoch.
Jamie even turned down Laoghaire when she later propositioned him, which suggested he wasn’t interested.
Gabaldon explained about the kiss after Jamie took the beating: “But when Laoghaire comes to thank him afterwards… well, he’s not engaged anywhere else, obviously has no future with Claire (he never thought it could happen, which is why their hasty marriage both drove him crazy with joy and turned him upside down), and… It’s a girl.
“She wants to kiss him. He is 22 years old and has not touched a girl for a very long time. There is no way he will push it away or reject it.”
She added to The Lit Forum: “But he never sees her as a potential wife or even as a sexual partner (for him, it would be the same thing).”
Despite locking lips with Laoghaire, Jamie ended up marrying Claire in order to protect her.

Claire and Jamie fell in love with a passionate wedding night, which saw their union sealed for life.
Although Jamie and Claire got married, the Highlander’s relationship took another turn when he married Laoghaire after believing his true love was dead.
Despite Jamie and Laoghaire being estranged and having an unhappy marriage, she was furious when Claire reunited with him.
This dynamic between Jamie, Claire and Laoghaire is likely to be revisited in season seven after it was confirmed many cast members including Hudson would be returning to Outlander.
Outlander season 7 will air later this year and seasons 1 to 6 are streaming on Lionsgate+ now
