Janette Manrara, 37, said it “feels weird” to watch her husband and fellow professional Aljaž Škorjanec on Strictly Come Dancing each week without being there herself. The choreographer quit the main show this year in order to host BBC’s Strictly: It Takes Two, taking over from Zoe Ball. Appearing on Channel 4’s Steph’s Packed Lunch, Janette explained she “really misses” taking part.
Steph McGovern asked: “Does it feel weird to watch Aljaz doing it and thinking, ‘Oh, I wish it was me?'”
“Yeah,” Janette replied. “I definitely, definitely miss dancing.
“I think what I miss the most – and Anton and I have spoken about this loads – it’s just being around the professionals and the weeks where you choreograph all the big group numbers and recording all the big group dances.
“And just kind of being on set with the crew and everybody – that part I really, really do miss.”
She added: “They don’t get rid of you though Steph, because I go there every Saturday anyway.”
Janette joined the show in 2013 for series 11, and took part in every show since until this year.
The 2020 series saw Janette make the final alongside singer Hrvy.
The couple took second place behind winners Bill Bailey and Oti Mabuse.
Aljaž, who has been married to Janette since 2017, is currently taking part in the competition.
The 31-year-old is dancing with Dragons’ Den star Sara Davies, and the couple have had mixed results on the show.
On Saturday’s Halloween week show, Aljaž took the blame following criticism from the judges over their Couple’s Choice dance.
“I’m going to take full blame for this, because this is a Couple’s Choice, so I’m taking full blame for it,” he said.
He added: “Nothing to do with Sara Davies, sorry about that.”
Before the series started, Janette explained her husband was having to isolate apart from her ahead of the show.
Speaking on BBC’s Morning Live in July, she detailed how it would be strange to not be joining her fellow dancer.
“Aljaz is going to be going in with all the pros in a couple of weeks’ time,” she said.
She added sadly: “They’re going to bubble up for four weeks to do the professional group numbers.
“I’m not going to be there and that’s what is really going to hit – that I won’t be dancing with them anymore.”
“So yes, he’s going to be getting out of the house soon.”
Janette’s role on It Takes Two sees her catching up each day with Strictly contestants and judges to discuss the latest show and what viewers can expect from the upcoming weekend.
Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday at 6.45pm on BBC One, while Strictly – It Takes Two airs weekdays at 6.30pm on BBC Two.
