Kimberly Walsh says Girls Aloud reunion would be ‘too painful’ without Sarah Harding

Girls Aloud's Kimberley Walsh appeared on This Morning today to speak to Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary following her unveiling as the character of Odd Socks on The Masked Dancer this weekend.

But Kimberley also spoke about how she and her Girls Aloud bandmates have funded a cancer research project in the late Sarah Harding’s name and told the hosts it’s unlikely the band will ever perform as a foursome again.

Sarah tragically died earlier this year at the age 39 and when asked about marking the band’s 20th anniversary in November, Kimberley explained: “We’re not really doing anything to celebrate that for obvious reasons, but what’s been really nice is we’ve been able to still come together and do some really positive fundraising for Sarah’s charity."

Kimberley added: "We’ve got our Sound of The Underground re-release and all the money’s going to go to breast cancer research and the hospital that looked after Sarah, so that’s been a really good way I think of us finding something positive and a way to channel that.”

Dermot asked, “Do you think sometime in the future you might do something to celebrate? You’ve got this incredible fan base who’d love to see you live?”

Kimberley said: “We were all together, we did a gala for Sarah last weekend and we were all together, and lots of our Girls Aloud family were there and it just felt really special to have that night, but I just feel for all of us, it would just be too painful."

She continued: "We’re so grateful that we had the time that we did and that we can find a way of doing something positive. But I don’t think it’s going to be something that we’ll do.”

It's been just over a year since the tragic passing Sarah who sadly died of breast cancer last September, aged 39.

Kimberley recently opened up to OK! up on why she found her 40th birthday a particularly strenuous battle as she continues to process her grief.

The mum-of-three said: "Birthdays are always going to be a tough one for me".

She added: "We were birthday twins. We’d talked about doing something for our 40ths when she was still with us and that’s what I was hoping would happen."

She also spoke of her grief saying: "It can take me at any moment. There can be triggers everywhere. It’s only been a year, so to us it still feels quite raw to be honest.

"I watch videos of her on stage. There was nobody more alive than her when she was in her element."

"The best thing for me is having the other three girls that I know feel the same," Kimberley explained. "We’re just helping each other through it.

"Sarah had a wish to fund research that her doctor was working on, so we said we’d do everything in our power to make that happen."

Cheryl, Nicola Roberts, Nadine Coyle and Kimberley held a gala, named the Promise Ball, to raise money in honour of Sarah earlier this month.

Taking to Instagram following the event, Cheryl, 39, wrote: “After an intensely emotional (& quite stressful) year of planning & organisation we managed to fulfil our last promise to Sarah.

"None of us can fight this awful disease by ourselves but by coming together, leaning on each other and fighting side by side we can surely try.”

Cheryl continued: “We are deeply grateful and touched by each person that helped in our endeavour and are incredibly proud to say we have reached our target goal, making us able to fund the entire study and also help in other ways for those currently suffering through harsh treatments.”
