Lady C appeared on Monday’s instalment of Dan Wootton Tonight on GB News to discuss Valentine Low’s new book which lifts the lid on life behind palace walls. The author alleged Meghan Markle wanted to be paid for walkabouts during a 16-day royal trip around Australia, Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand in 2018. Lady C branded the Duchess of Sussex “a hustler” as she addressed the explosive claims.
Extracts from Courtiers: The Hidden Power Behind The Crown were released last week and claim tensions were building long before the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down as senior royals in 2020.
The book claims Meghan “enjoyed the attention” she received during royal tours but “did not understand the point of royal walkabouts”.
It alleged the Duchess was liked for her “refreshingly informal” approach to royal life but “it was a different story” out of the public eye.
A source in the book claimed Meghan said of her tour in Fiji: “I can’t believe I’m not getting paid for this.”
Dan asked Lady C what she thought about the allegations surrounding the Fiji tour. It has not been confirmed whether Meghan made the comment in jest or in seriousness.
Dan exclaimed: “Lady C, she was living in a palace, she was travelling on first-class flights to represent the country, she was wearing free clothes. And she wanted to be paid – I mean seriously?”
Lady C laughed: “Well, you know, once a hustler, always a hustler and she didn’t understand she had been paid.
“Her clothing allowance for the two years she was in the Royal Family was greater than every single queen, duchess and princess in the whole of Europe put together. So that is just one aspect of it.”
She later said the Sussexes have been “creating havoc” since stepping down as senior royals.
Lady C claimed: “There is no doubt that Valentine Low could not have written what he did and quoted the people he has quoted without the agreement of the palace.
“I think good for Prince William because my understanding is he has been the one who has backed up the disadvantaged staff from the word go, and he has stood up for them.”
The GB News debate divided viewers, with many showing their support for the Duchess of Sussex on Twitter.
Matthew Ayers tweeted: “This is yet again appalling reporting. Nothing short of a vendetta against her. Shameful.” (sic)
Calmali Camotim added: “GB News is turning into showbiz news.”
Deb Powell commented: “The joyous grin on @danwootton ‘s face is quite disturbing. I’m team nobody. I agree if the stories are true that it’s not pleasant but your obsession with destroying them is equally unpleasant.”
Aletha Bernard penned: “This is truly disgusting. The look of glee on @DanWootton’s face is very disturbing. When will someone step in and stop this?”
Tim Raynor remarked: “Will there ever be a day when GB News doesn’t mention Meghan? I don’t know if you’ve noticed but there are one or two more important issues going on at present.”
J.S added: “It’s getting so so boring. Must hurt them there is nothing they can do about them. It’s a serious obsession.” (sic)
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have not been able to respond to the allegations in the book.
