The Last Kingdom is on Netflix now and the series has just been renewed for season five. The season four finale showed Uhtred of Bebbanburg (played by Alexander Dreymon) help save Winchester from a Danish siege. Haesten (Jeppe Beck Laursen) was seeing fleeing the battle having helped Eadith (Stefanie Martini) escape, and the actor spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about his character development.
Will Haesten join the Saxons in The Last Kingdom season 5?
Haesten was introduced to The Last Kingdom in season two and he is considered to be one of the main villains of the series.
The Danish warlord cares only for self-preservation, and he has tried plenty of times to kill Uhtred.
However fans saw a different side to him in season four, and actor Laursen said his more vulnerable side shone through.
He had come across Uhtred and his friends along a trail and lost in a fight against Uhtred.
Towards the end of the season, he was seen helping Eadith keep safe during the Winchester battle.
Laursen spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about how he admired showing a different side to Haesten.
He said: “Whatever makes him feel more three-dimensional is great to me.
“A lot of shows like this have a tendency to show the bad guys as just bad guys, and every intent they have is evil.
“For this show, for me, it’s not easy to distinguish who is the bad guy.”
Although Haesten does not always initiate war, he is keen to be a part of the action. But it seems he has grown tired of fighting.
Laursen said: “Everyone is self-serving, Haesten more than some of course.
“For me, it was great to be able to show a lot of time has passed since Haesten comes in.
“People grow, they get older and change their focus. He is sick of war and being in the mud. He just wants some land and a woman.
“He’s a notorious liar and schemer and he knows it, it’s a change of character.”
Haesten is known for doing anything if it means a personal gain for him.

Fans have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts on his character and how he has developed.
One said: “I love The Last Kingdom but come on, Haesten has a chance to kill Uhtred but leaves him to his men?”
Another fan said: “So I’m re-watching The Last Kingdom, I forgot how big of a traitor Haesten is.
“He was playing both sides of the field, Saxons and Danes, oh wow.”
Another viewer said how Haesten was “one of the best characters in The Last Kingdom”.
Laursen said fans have opened up to Haesten’s character arc across the series.
He said: “This season fans have really warmed up to him, in season two he’s just like any other lieutenant and fans have been apprehensive.
“But in the latest season he just goes around trolling people, he can’t keep his mouth shut.”
Fans are wondering whether Haesten will swap his allegiance to the opposing side in season five.
One said on Twitter: “I cannot stop thinking about how in the season four finale of The Last Kingdom, Haesten had been harbouring Eadith to keep her safe from Sigtryggyr (Eysteinn Sigurðarson), but when the s*** hit the fan and he was the last man on Earth who could save her, she STILL wouldn’t leave with him.”
