Call The Midwife returns to BBC One this Sunday with the season 11 finale and viewers were left on the edge of their seats. Dr Turner (played by Stephen McGann) was on the train that crashed and his wife Shelagh had no idea. Fans are keen to find out more about the actress, including her relationship status.

Is Laura Main married?

Laura Main, 40, has been playing Shelagh Turner in the BBC drama since 2012.

She was known as Sister Bernadette before she married the doctor and continues to be a fan-favourite character.

Actress Main is from Aberdeen and she has two older sisters.

She initially studied history before moving to drama school at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London.

The musical theatre star features as a soloist in several tracks on the Call the Midwife album.

As for her personal life, she has not given much away about her marital status.

Back in 2017, she revealed she had separated from her boyfriend, Stephen McGlynn.

She had been with the theatre actor for five years and gave some details at the time.

She told The Sunday Post: “If anyone were to look on the internet they would think I was still in a relationship, but let’s just say I am now single.”

The couple met when they both starred in the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical State Fair.

In 2015 she revealed their work schedules often meant they did not see much of each other.

She told Entertainment Daily: “In fact, it’s actually got to the point where we are watching different DVD box sets.

“I’m on Top of the Lake and he’s engrossed in Dexter – Lord knows what a relationship counsellor would make of that!

“But when we have odd days off together, we like to see a matinee at the theatre or cinema.”

At this moment in time, she has not divulged whether she is in a relationship.

Her on-screen husband in Call The Midwife, Stephen McGann, is married to the show’s creator, Heidi Thomas.

Main has been sharing plenty of updates from the series on her Instagram account and she appeared on The One Show to promote the series.

Outside of the series, she had been playing a fairy godmother in a stage production of Beauty and the Beast.

She said on Instagram: “I have just LOVED being back in a theatre and on the stage again!

“It has been the most wonderful tonic during this strange time. Singing my heart out (twice a day, 6 days a week!), getting involved in some of the comedy, even a bit of slapstick, and quite literally, because I am the fairy, creating a little magic for the audience!

“The panto has also brought back a bit of normality to folk who love the theatre and for whom panto is part of their Christmas traditions.

“It’s two hours of escapism and a huge laugh for all ages.” [Sic]

Main was praised by BBC viewers for her challenging Call The Midwife episode during which her character delivered a baby with gastroschisis.

This is where the intestines are on the outside of the body and it is something she had never dealt with in her career to date.

The star admitted it was “a big one” for her and she left viewers in tears.

Call The Midwife season 11 concludes on BBC One on Sunday at 8pm.
