Married At First Sight UK's Whitney Hughes has been forced to defend herself on social media after being branded "rude" in "vile messages" on social media.

The 31 year old took to Instagram on Wednesday night to post a statement addressing her behaviour on the show but calling out the abusive messages she’s been sent online.

She also teased in the statement that "a lot more will unfold" over the coming episodes and thanked those who have reached out with messages of support.

The statement posted to Instagram read: "I’ve always been in two minds about whether or not I should speak up about what I’m experiencing but that has put me in an uncomfortable position in the past."

She added: "Equally, it is impossible to explain my side of things without bringing down others and that is not what I want to do. We’re only two weeks in, a lot more will unfold in the next few weeks."

She concluded: "One of the many things this experience has taught me is patience but whether or not you change your opinion on me, it's never going to be OK to personally send me or others vile messages/comments.

"I can't imagine doing effects your life in a positive way, that energy could be used to show love to anyone. Putting that aside, I would like to say a massive thank you to the people reaching out to show support. It honestly means so much."

Whitney and her new husband Duka Cav met for the first time at the alter and Whitney's reaction was less than enthusiastic with viewers appalled by her "disrespectful" behaviour towards Duka, 31, and many fans threatening to call Ofcom over scenes.

Whitney confessed he wasn't the man she was expecting and compared him to a shed.

There was more drama in Wednesday's episode (September 7) during the group dinner where things reached a limit for Whitney and she burst into tears.

In a scene with Whitney and Zoe, Whitney rolled her eyes and said: "It happened. The guy made us say, 'I do' but 'I do' is really intense…I was like…'Do I?' It was just a bit of a shock to the system."

As Whitney spoke to her fellow contestants, she said: '"I survived!" before desperately confessing she needed a drink. She added: "I'm going to sit here by myself."

But ahead of last night's episode, viewers took to Twitter to vent their rage. One wrote: “Whitney just doesn’t like the fact that Duka gets more attention because plot twist… he’s actually a nice person.”

A second tweeted: “Whitney is a gaslighting piece of s*** and is borderline bullying Duka. If those "experts" had a shred of decency, they'd remove her from the show.”

A third wrote: “The British public to Whitney,” alongside a picture of Kermit the frog holding a book entitled "How to slap someone through the internet".

Another added: “Honestly don’t know why Whitney got picked! She’s just not into the married vibe at all.”

Whitney has already hit back at negativity in an interview with The Sun.n Following backlash from fans over her behaviour, the PA from St Albans said: “I mean, I wasn’t going into it with these super high expectations, expecting to find the love of my life because I can be quite pessimistic. But deep down yes I did want to find a really good connection with my husband."

She continued: “I went into denial for a second, and then I got to the end of the aisle, and I was like, OK I’ve got to marry this guy. And it was like, ‘OK don't trip, don’t trip!’"

She added: “The thing is, I actually hate drama and I hate being in confronting situations. My go to is being sort of dry and sarcastic and blunt, that is my way of diverting away from opening my heart.

“I don’t think the viewers get my humour yet, they might eventually see that most of the time I’m just joking. I don’t take myself too seriously so I don’t know why everyone else is. It’s just dry sarcastic humour a lot of the time."

Whitney, who left fans threatening to call Ofcom over her "rude" behaviour, has had a rough start to her marriage. Whilst on their honeymoon the newlyweds were seen on a safari and while taking in the scenery as Duka told his new wife: "I wouldn't necessarily class myself as a colourful person."

Whitney didn't seem impressed and replied: "Really?"

"No I wouldn't," Duka said bluntly, to which Whitney continued: "Yeah you're a bit, you know, glitter and gold. You like to put on a show."

Married at First Sight UK is on Monday to Thursday on E4 at 9pm.
