Last month, fans watched as the final series of the much-loved show Doc Martin came to an end. Despite the series finishing, actor Martin Clunes revealed which item from the show his wife managed to keep for them.
After 10 seasons of following the life of Dr. Martin Ellingham in the fictional fishing village Portwenn, it all came to an end last month.
In the last episode, fans watched the grumpy doctor decide to stay in Cornwall and not move to London, which pleased both his family and all the residents in the village.
Despite the emotional goodbye to the Doc, viewers will get to see him one last time in the upcoming Christmas special.
Actor Martin spoke about the upcoming festive episode along with parting with his long-running role for the final time.
When asked if he took a souvenir from the production or the town where the show was set, Martin confessed there is one item his wife managed to get for him.
He admitted: “I really wanted the spaniel model which stood outside the pharmacy for people to put money in for charity.
“It was pointed out that it belonged to a hire company and that they don’t usually part with them.
“But somehow my wife got it and gave it to me. It is now very proudly in the entrance hall to our house.”
As long-standing fans will know, the Christmas period isn’t the doctor’s favourite time due to his troubled upbringing.
He’s become cynical about the holidays after his parents left him on Christmas Day with nothing but an orange and pencil kit to play with in his stocking.
Although now he has children of his own, he’s starting to question his own parenting as he believes the season is a load of nonsense.
Speaking about what people can expect in the special episode, Martin added Doc’s wife is trying to help their son get festive despite the doctor’s reservations.
He said: “His son James is trying to get into the spirit of Christmas and Louisa is trying to engage with James’ engagement so there’s a sort of impasse between Louisa, James and the Doc.
“Then there’s Leonard played by Ron Cook, who has his own personal problems with Christmas.
“His wife, who loved Christmas, died five years ago just two days before Christmas, although he is solving it by entering into the celebration and playing Santa.”
Fans will also see the return of Claire Bloom, who played Doc Martin’s awful mother, as she’s seen in a hallucination.
Along with Claire, returning to the cast there are special appearances from Ron Cook and Emma Amos.
A synopsis for the Christmas special reads: “Martin is called out to see Leonard (Santa) who has had an accident, and as he is anaemic he cannot afford to lose any blood.
“As Martin is driving to Leonard’s house the weather is getting worse and he has an accident, which causes him to hallucinate about his mother, prompting some of his own parenting concerns.
“Eventually making it to Leonard’s house and recovering from the cold, he treats Leonard. Leonard confides in Martin about the death of his wife and why he celebrates Christmas.
“He challenges Martin to do the same. But will they make it back to the village in time for the Christmas parade Louisa has organised?”
Although there is no official confirmed date for the Christmas special, it’s expected to air over the festive period.
