Mayflies is based on the novel of the same name by author Andrew O’Hagan that came out in 1979. The book-turned-BBC-drama tells the tale of lifelong friends James (played by Martin Compston) and Tully (Tony Curran) after one of them gets some devastating news and asks for help. Who is in the cast of Mayflies?
James – Martin Compston
James is one-half of the Scottish best friends who grew close after leaving school in 1986.
The series will be split between two timelines, the first in the 1980s and the second in the present day.
Actor Martin Compston is best known for portraying DS Steve Arnott in the BBC crime drama Line of Duty.
Some of his other parts have been in Vigil, The Nest, Our House, Traces and Mary Queen of Scots.
Tully – Tony Curran
James’ best friend is Tully who is at the heart of the drama as he finds out he has terminal cancer with just four months to live.
He wants to die on his own terms and so asks James if he will help him go to Switzerland so he can end his life.
Actor Tony Curran has been in shows like SEAL Team, Bryan Cranston’s Your Honor, Elementary, Roots and Defiance.
One of his biggest roles to date has been in the drama Ray Donovan as Sgt Mikey “Rad” Radulovic.
Anna – Ashley Jensen
Tully has asked for James to help him die in Switzerland, unbeknown to his wife Anna.
But will James go through with it and keep this massive secret from her?
Actress Ashley Jensen is behind Nurse Emma in the black-comedy drama After Life on Netflix, starring opposite Ricky Gervais.
Besides this, Jensen has been in Extras, Ugly Betty, Agatha Raisin and Accidentally on Purpose.

Iona – Tracy Ifeachor
While James is struggling with the moral dilemma, his wife Iona is on hand to give him support.
She is also unaware of what Tully is asking of her husband so is he really going to go through with it without telling anyone?
Earlier this year, actress Tracy Ifeachor was behind duty solicitor Cleo Roberts in Showtrial.
She has also been in The CW’s The Originals and was Abigail Naismith in the Doctor Who Christmas special The End of Time.
Young James – Rian Gordon
Taking on the younger version of Compston’s character James is actor Rian Gordon.
He has played Conor Brodie in River City and young Jerome in BBC’s Silent Witness.
Young Tully – Tom Glynn-Carney
Actor Tom Glynn-Carney is behind the young Tully and has been in House of the Dragon, Dunkirk, The King and Rialto.
Mayflies premieres on Wednesday, December 28, at 9pm on BBC One.
