CBS This Morning host Gayle King will be anchoring a special report from New York, while Omid Scobie will be appearing live from Windsor Castle for news channel ABC. King is a good friend to Oprah Winfrey and became close with Meghan and Prince Harry when they moved to California. Scobie struck up a friendship with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex when he became their biographer.

Scobie confirmed to his Twitter followers on Thursday that he would be at Windsor Castle today.

“A celebration of Prince Philip’s life and live coverage of his funeral will begin tomorrow Saturday April 17 at 9.30am Eastern on @ABC and @ABCNewsLive, direct from Windsor Castle,” he penned.

Earlier this month, King came under fire from fans on social media after she questioned how Prince Philip died.

She asked CBS correspondent Charles D’Agata if Prince Philip died of “natural causes”.

She said: “He was at the hospital and when he was released people were feeling really good, they were thinking he was getting better. I know when you’re 99 you never know how much longer you’re going to have but people are feeling pretty good when he left the hospital.

“Have you heard anything about exactly what happened? Was it just natural causes?”

Mr D’Agata replied: “I think we all have a sense of relief when a person as old as he is going to the hospital and then spends about a month and undergoes a heart procedure you’re not thinking it’s going to turn out great.

“We were all pleasantly surprised when he left. In terms of whether they knew he was nearing the end, we don’t know.”

This week Scobie also stepped in to defend his pal Meghan after she said she was unable to return to the UK for Prince Philip’s funeral due to her pregnancy.

Prince Harry has travelled from the US to pay his respects to his grandfather however he made the trip on his own after his heavily pregnant wife was advised against making the journey by doctors.

He said: “Despite wanting to be here not only to be with her family.

“But to also be with Harry to support him during a very difficult time.”

He added: “Unfortunately, due to a lack of medical clearance, remember she is heavily pregnant, Meghan was unable to come here.

“But we saw those wishes reflected from not only Harry but Meghan and the rest of the family in that statement from yesterday.

“He was very clear on pointing out that it was on behalf of all of them.

“And I think that is really going to be the mood moving forward with Harry at the funeral on Saturday.”

Prince Philip passed away last Friday two days before his 100th birthday.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral will take place today at 3pm at Windsor Castle and only 30 people are allowed to attend due to coronavirus restrictions.

All attendees will wear face coverings and sit two metres apart unless they are part of the same household or bubble.

And, a royal spokesperson said, the monarch had to “make some difficult decisions” over who could attend the funeral of the Duke.

They told People magazine: “We are dealing with a family funeral and at its heart it is still a family event.”
