Watch the trailer for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ creators Chris Black and Matt Fraction teased the series’ huge mystery that’s almost as big as the iconic rampaging reptile at the center of the action.
Kurt Russell and his son Wyatt Russell both portray Army officer Lee Shaw in the decades-spanning Apple TV+ drama, investigating disasters caused by Godzilla and other titans across the globe.
Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Black and Fraction revealed the Hollywood Russells were eager to work on a project together before they signed on.
“Our brilliant casting director, Ronna Kress, suggested to us, ‘Hey, Kurt and Wyatt Russell have been looking for a thing to do together’,” Fraction said.
“And we just thought, right away, ‘Oh, that would be great’.” “Yeah, sold!” Black chimed in.

Fraction went on: “We met with them, talked about the character, and could see them get excited.
“They’d been offered father and son a lot, but never the same person. And, not to speak for them, but the challenge of building one guy across the span of time together let them flex acting muscles they normally don’t get to do.”
The action of Monarch kicks off after Godzilla’s attack on San Francisco in 2014 as depicted in Gareth Edwards’ American revamp from that year.
Throughout the 10 episodes, it also cuts to Shaw’s adventures in the 1950s, meaning 72-year-old Kurt’s version of the character would be about 90 years old.

“He’s remarkably well preserved!” Fraction joked.
“The characters in the show comment on it,” he went on to tease.
“There is a secret, there is a mystery there. There’s an explanation for why it is the way it is.

“But we’re not gonna tell you what it is!”
Black added: “Watching the show is the journey of how Lee becomes Shaw and how Shaw reconnects with who he was when he was Lee.
“It’s a long journey,” he concluded, hinting Monarch’s first season could just be the start of much more monster madness to come.
