BBC Breakfast correspondent Mike Bushell was interviewing Rugby League star Jon Wilkin on Saturday’s instalment of the news programme in front of three Rugby Football League World Cup trophies. However, the interview descended into chaos when Mike almost kicked over the trophies. He was scolded by host Naga Munchetty for his dangerous move which happened at Newcastle United’s pitch.

“Let’s do a little kick,” Mike said as he kicked a rugby ball to Jon who luckily caught it before any trophies were damaged.

“I’m sorry about that,” Mike exclaimed. “Unsee that please, that did not happen.”

A woman who was standing beside the trophies fumed: “You are not even allowed to touch them let alone let alone do that.”

An apologetic Mike said he wasn’t thinking about the trophies as he was concentrating on kicking the ball to Jon.

As Jon was laughing off the blunder, the woman next to him warned Mike that he was going to be carted off the pitch following his “epic fail”.

Naga, who was watching Mike from the studio, teased him that officials would escort him off the pitch.

Naga quipped: “They are coming for you, they are coming right now for you Mike, be careful.”

A representative for the club pretended he didn’t see Mike’s kick and the sports reporter reminded viewers the trophies were not damaged.

Mike told Naga “it was such a good kick” before she scolded his actions live on BBC Breakfast.

The 47-year-old host warned a regretful Mike: “Don’t do it again!”

Charlie interjected: “They are all smiling now [on the pitch] but there will be words.”

Naga agreed with her co-host and as she appeared concerned Mike was going to get reprimanded once filming had stopped.
