Narcos: Mexico is the spin-off from the popular Netflix drama Narcos, and it’s about to return for its second season. While the original series focused on the illegal drug trade in Colombia, Narcos: Mexico–as the title suggests–explores the growth of Mexican cartels in the 1980s. The first trailer for Season 2 has now arrived.
The show stars Diego Luna (Star Wars: Rogue One) as cartel boss Félix Gallardo, who is looking to increase his control of the drug trade south of the border. “The Colombians are no longer in charge. It’s my turn,” he says in the trailer. Scoot McNairy (Argo) plays the DEA agent attempting to bring him down, and the first look at the new season seems to offer the same mix of violence and intrigue that made Narcos a hit. Check the trailer out below.
All 10 episodes of Narcos: Mexico Season 2 hit Netflix on February 13. The series also stars Teresa Ruiz, Mayra Hermosillo, Sosie Bacon, Andrés Londoño, and Alex Knight.
In an interview with El Pais, Luna spoke about the challenge of portraying a compelling real-life character such as Gallardo without glamourising his criminal lifestyle. “I don’t think it glorifies them,” he said.” It shows a very dark world that I don’t want to belong to. But this profile always arouses interest. Characters who are willing to cross a line that you and I never would. As long as their stories are not given a hero’s arc, you are doing a good job.
“We humanize Félix’s journey because it is important that he not be one-dimensional, that he is not just the bad guy. He is moved by the same things as everyone: love, pain, anger, jealousy, friendship, freedom. He even questions the business. But I am against inviting the public to participate. That is horrifying.”
