After more than two decades on screens, the mainline NCIS series will finally be crossing over with its two popular spin-offs next year – long-running offshoot NCIS: Los Angeles and its more recent counterpart, NCIS: Hawaii. While fans of the CBS mainstay are thrilled to see their favourite agents collide, their next mission could have disastrous consequences for some key players.
NCIS Hawaii’s team leader Jane Tennant (played by Vanessa Lachey) could be in grave danger when the series returns next year.
The highly anticipated crossover event will occur in early January and finally bring the three current NCIS task forces together for one massive mission.
A new teaser trailer released this week has given viewers their first look at the three-part event, and it’s clear the stakes have never been higher.
The brief look at the episodes begins with two armed agents approaching a barn and yelling, “Federal agents!”
Tennant is then shown looking stricken while Alden Parker (Gary Cole) surveys a map of Los Angeles.
Agents Nicolas Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) and Jessica Knight (Katrina Law) are seen in the field before the action ramps up with an explosion knocking someone off their feet.
“Whatever we’ve stepped into, it’s big,” LA agent Sam Hanna (LL Cool J) says in voiceover.
However, what may be the most pressing matter of the trailer is shown just after long-standing agent Timothy McGee (Sean Murray) is introduced.
Two unknown hostages, a male and a female, are tied to chairs with black bags covering their heads.
The prisoners are dripping with sweat and appear to be breathing heavily, so whoever has been captured is obviously fearing for their lives.
Could the NCIS franchise be about to kill off one or two of its most popular characters in the midst of its biggest crossover yet?
The woman on the right’s body type and fashion style could be a match for Tennant, who has led just a season and a half of NCIS: Hawaii so far.

The series is unlikely to kill off a team leader after such a short time on the job, but actress Vanessa is no ordinary NCIS star.
In addition to her investigations in the North Pacific, Vanessa is also a popular TV personality and reality show host.
Her commitments to the likes of Love Is Blind and The Ultimatum could conflict with her NCIS schedule soon if they haven’t already.
While neither CBS nor Vanessa have confirmed anything of the sort, the success of her reality shows could force her to take on a reduced role as Tennant going forward.
She could also be about to be written out of the show altogether, leaving someone like Kai Holman (Alex Tarrant) or Kate Whistler (Tori Anderson) to take up the mantle.
As for the male hostage, the dark green jacket could easily be something from either McGee or Dr Jimmy Palmer’s (Brian Dietzen) wardrobe.
Unfortunately, for now, fans will just have to keep speculating before NCIS returns to kick off the new year with one of the biggest TV events in US history.
The NCISverse Crossover Event will air Monday, January 2 on CBS in the USA. A UK release date is yet to be announced.
