Netflixs You: what you need to know before you watch series 4 including every murder

We are buzzing that next week will see the release of season four of You – based on Caroline Kepnes’ series of novels. And trust us when we say, it’s bigger than ever.

Worlds away from Gossip Girl’s lonely boy Dan Humphrey, Penn Badgley takes on the role of stalker and serial killer Joe Goldberg. He was obsessed with Guinevere Beck in the first series and fell for Love Quinn in the second, before they returned with their baby Henry for the third season.

But in season four, Joe jets off solo to Europe. He settles into life in the UK, escaping his messy past with a new identity as he searches for another “love”.

While Joe believes this will be a well-needed fresh start for him, he may face obstacles along the way as he soon discovers he isn’t the only killer in town.

To get us in the mood for this next instalment, we’ve taken a look back at the killer moments so far….

The love interests

Guinevere Beck

Fans saw aspiring writer Beck – portrayed by Elizabeth Lail – first cross paths with Joe in a bookshop and the pair instantly hit it off. A romance blossomed, but Joe grew intense. Totally unaware, Beck thought she was in a happy relationship until she found her ex Benji's teeth stored away in Joe's souvenir box. Beck then found herself in the same glass cage Benji was imprisoned in. She escaped, but Joe caught up with her and it didn't end well…

Candace Stone

Joe's first love was Candace Stone, played by Amber Childers. The girlfriend of Joe's past appeared in several flashbacks before Joe supposedly "killed" her when he found out she was going to leave him for another man./ But in season two, viewers discovered Candace actually survived Joe's attempted murder. Her one goal was to warn Joe's new obsession, Love Quinn, about what he's capable of. When Candace tried to persuade Love to come forward to the police, things took an unexpected turn…

Love Quinn

With her fiercely independent personality, aspiring chef Love – played by Victoria Pedretti – was bound to be Joe's next love interest. The pair met while they were both out shopping and Love later turned up at Joe's apartment to nurse his unburn. Love told Joe that her husband passed away, leaving her a widow – which was the perfect way in for Joe. As Joe's obsession with Love grew, fans realised she had a similar twisted mind when she killed Joe's first love, Candace. Love then found out she was pregnant so the couple moved to start a new life together with their baby. But the pair soon found themselves back in their old murdering ways again, and things didn't go smoothly…

Natalie Engler

After Joe and Love became a family of three, Joe's head was turned by their neighbour, Natalie (Michaela McManus). Understandably, Love was angry when she found out – and started an affair with Theo, the son of Natalie. Instead of talking to Joe about how hurt she was feeling, Love ended up killing Natalie and the rest of season three saw her and Joe trying to cover up the murder together. How romantic!

Marienne Bellamy

You'd think Joe might have learnt his lesson by now, but he fell for someone else while still married to Love – this time with librarian Marienne (Tati Gabirllee). As his marriage struggled, the pair grew closer. When Love discovered they were seeing each other behind her back, she again tried to get rid of the threat. However, when Love attempted to kill her off, Marienne's child walked in…

The locations

New York City

The first gripping season was filmed entirely in New York City, where we saw Joe, a bookshop keeper, fall in love with Beck. Along the way, viewers had a glimpse of Beck's house on East 19th St, a bar in a village in the town of Orangetown and Logo's Bookstore on York Avenue.

Los Angeles

In season two, Joe relocated to Los Angeles. He soon crossed paths with his future wife, Love. Looking back on the location where Joe and Love met, Netflix used a hipster grocery called Urban Radish on Imperial St, Los Angeles. They also used a real apartment for Joe's home on Winona Boulevard and a real storage unit called Life Storage for Joe's storage unit on the show, but changed the name. Many of the scenes were filmed on location in LA, while others were shot in a studio in Burbank, California.

San Francisco

Joe and Love moved to Madre Linda to start family life together, and in the show, Joe described the picturesque town as a "soulless wealthy suburb outside of San Francisco". The friendly but soon-to-be cliquey neighbourhood, which was supposed to be a fresh start for the couple, however, is not a real location. But people believe the Californian cities Sierra Madre and Yorba Linda could have been the inspiration behind the name Madre Linda.

London

Producers made the decision to relocate for each season to mirror Joe's twisted persona, so it's hardly surprising they're heading to Europe for the fourth! Two of the main filming locations for the new season are Knebworth House in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, and Royal Holloway University in Egham, Surrey. And Joe's cover was blown in March last year when students spotted Penn Badley strolling across campus grass and filming scenes at the Founder's Building.

You will be available to stream on Netflix from Thursday 9 February.
