It’s been over a year since Daniel Craig finished playing James Bond in No Time To Die, but who will take over the coveted role? Henry Cavill was famously the runner-up to the outgoing 007 at the last round of auditions for Casino Royale back in 2005 and has vocally said he’s open to talking to EON Productions about taking up the Licence To Kill next. However, his time and attention look like they’ll be taken up elsewhere following dramatic leaks of game-changing footage for the next big blockbuster to hit cinema screens this winter.
After being beaten to Bond by Craig, Cavill was cast as Superman in Man of Steel. And despite the success of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, his future as the DC superhero has been far from certain.
In the meantime he’s starred in spy movies like Mission: Impossible – Fallout and the upcoming Argylle, plus has played Sherlock Holmes twice in Enola Holmes.
He also has the lead role in Netflix’s The Witcher keeping him busy and with his days as Clark Kent seemingly behind him, some fans were wondering if he’d now have time in his schedule to finally play Bond. Such hopes look to be dashed following a stream of news on DC at Warner Bros in a new report in the Hollywood press.
Cavill’s Superman is heavily rumoured to show up in the end credits scene of The Rock’s DC movie Black Adam when released this Friday, teasing a return to the franchise.
Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter’s insiders claim Dwayne Johnson is very keen on a Black Adam v Superman movie, which such a tease would seem to heavily imply.
Allegedly, the former wrestler ensured the scene was shot around mid-September after “a furious round of negotiating” at Warner Bros over whether it should happen or not.
On top of this, the studio, which recently merged with Discovery and is going through its own changes, “has an intense desire” to make a Man of Steel 2 with Cavill.
The new Superman project is being produced by Charles Roven, is in search of writers and has Mission Impossible’s Christopher McQuarrie as a favourite to direct.
This would mean at least two projects for Cavill’s Man of Steel and presumably EON Productions wouldn’t be keen on having a new Bond who was so intensely attached to another major fictional character at the same time.
Adding to this, the star hits 40 next year and according to 007 producer Michael G Wilson, they want someone in their thirties – not their twenties or forties – to play Ian Fleming’s spy, that way ensuring three to five movies over the course of around a decade in the role.

Wilson told Deadline earlier this month: “We’ve tried looking at younger people in the past. But trying to visualise it doesn’t work. Remember, Bond’s already a veteran. He’s had some experience. He’s a person who has been through the wars, so to speak. He’s probably been in the SAS or something. He isn’t some kid out of high school that you can bring in and start off. That’s why it works for a thirty-something.”
Cavill is currently leading the UK bookies lists as clear favourite with odds of 11-4 but all that looks set to change.
