The Pogues in Outer Banks have been pretty fortunate throughout all three seasons of the coming-of-age adventure drama on Netflix, avoiding a plethora of near-death experiences. In the early days, when the gang was up to no good, Deputy Shoupe (played by Cullen Moss) was considered a villain, trying to put a stop to their plans at every opportunity. As the series has gone on, subscribers have ever so slightly warmed to Shoupe, believing he is simply doing his job rather than someone who is actually working against the Pogues.

Outer Banks’ Deputy Shoupe has been portrayed by actor Cullen Moss from season one.
One Tree Hill fans may best recognise the 47-year-old as Junk in the drama which ran for nine seasons.
Junk played basketball with Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) on the River Court before joining the Ravens and after graduation, he bought a house with Mouth (Lee Norris), Fergie (Vaughan L. Wilson), Skills (Antwon Tanner) and, later, Millicent (Lisa Goldstein).
Bar One Tree Hill, Moss has featured in Hidden Figures, Your Honor, The Underground Railroad, The Staircase and The Righteous Gemstones.
He may now be better associated with Outer Banks’ serious-looking sheriff but Moss did have competition for the role.
The Pogue stars of the Netflix series took part in a fun puppy interview for Buzzfeed Celeb.
While they were cuddling and playing with a bunch of cute pooches, the cast was asked various questions about the show.
Among them was regarding surprising roles they auditioned and didn’t get and it was Cleo actress Carlacia Grant’s answer that her co-stars did a double take to.
She told Jonathan Daviss and Chase Stokes: “I actually auditioned to play Shoupe in Outer Banks, like Deputy Shoupe.
Daviss stated: “I didn’t – that’s my first time hearing that.”
“How did you keep that a secret for that long?” Stokes questioned.
“Yeah I just cleared out all my files and was like ‘oh’,” Grant replied.
They weren’t the only ones who didn’t know about this audition as actor Moss told Express.co.uk.

When informed about Grant’s audition for his part, Moss said: “Who’s playing Cleo? She auditioned for Shoupe? What?
“I had no idea, we have never really been on screen together, Carlacia and I.
“We’ve only gotten to hang out a few times on set and then we caught up again at the premiere out there in LA.
“But she’s wonderful and we had no idea she read for Shoupe, that would be a very different take.
“Well I think things worked out as they should have, she’s got a much cooler role than I have!”
Thankfully, this isn’t the end of Outer Banks just yet on Netflix.
The streaming service renewed the show for a fourth outing not too long after series three came out.
An official release date hasn’t been announced but it is likely to return sometime in early 2024.
Outer Banks is available to watch on Netflix.
