Starz series Outlander is predominantly set in the 18th century during a period of less sanitary and sterile conditions. Compared to the 20th century with its modern medicine, this early era was gory when it came to treating medical ailments. Outlander rarely shies away from the brutality of the period but also some of the more unsavoury aspects when it comes to treating patients.
Which Outlander scene did Sam Heughan and Catriona find ‘disgusting’?
WARNING: This article contains major spoilers from Outlander season 5
Season five of Outlander saw Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan) on the doorstep of death after he was bitten by a rattlesnake.
Instead of undergoing an amputation on his leg, which would stop the venom from spreading, Jamie decided he would rather die.
Jamie’s wife and trained doctor Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) was beside herself with grief after it looked like she was going to lose her husband.
After he was initially bitten, Claire ordered Marsali Fraser (Lauren Lyle) to bring some maggots to eat the dead flesh from the wound as she made plans to try and save him.
Speaking on the last episode of the Outlander End of Summer series recently, both Heughan and Balfe addressed working with the maggots.
“They’re very noisy like a bowl of Rice Krispies,” Balfe said.
While Heughan added: “Yeah they move so damn fast. You put them down and they are off. I think you were quite fascinated by them.”
Balfe explained: “I was. First of all, they came in and stank. You weren’t there at this point, it was myself and Lauren.
“They were brought in in a box and you could hear [them]. But then this waft of rotting flesh… it was disgusting.”
Balfe added: “So, we requested that they be washed somehow.”
However, it wasn’t all bad with Balfe quipping: “But I think we also enjoyed watching you squirm a little.
“We knew it wasn’t too bad and they would go missing up your leg or under your leg.”

Heughan addressed shooting the scene with the tiny creatures on him.
He said: “So, I had this prosthetic on obviously and you can’t see where it ends.
“I was just waiting for them to find the edge and get under it.
“I was also trying to stay in the scene as well and it’s kind of hard when you’ve got thousands of little maggots charging around, trying to get into every crook.”
Despite the challenges of filming the moment, the acting duo managed to complete the scenes.
Although this is one of the goriest moments in season five, the forthcoming sixth outing is likely to feature some sickening scenes.
Season six will take its cue from A Breath of Snow and Ashes which sees Claire performing a huge procedure which doesn’t quite go to plan.
There is also likely to be more illnesses and outbreaks during this time period particularly with war coming.
The show’s writers could also include some other big moments leaving fans feeling a little queasy.
