Queen of the South fans had to adjust to some important differences in series four. Camila Vargas (played by Veronica Falcon) and James Valdez (Peter Gadiot) were not part of the majority of the series, despite being some of the biggest characters in the USA Network series. This was the case until the last few moments of the season four finale.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Queen of the South.

James had left in series three as he was insulted by the fact Teresa Mendoza (Alice Braga) had questioned his loyalty.

To try and protect her though, he started working alongside CIA agent Devon Finch (Jamie Hector) to find out what they know about her and keep Teresa safe.

Teresa wasn’t in on this plan so just assumed James no longer wanted anything to do with her or the business.

She is expected to find out the truth behind him leaving though as he suddenly returned in the series four finale.

A car manically drove up to the warehouse where Teresa’s operation is based and James fell out.

He was injured with blood on his shirt and Teresa ran over to tend to him and ask what had gone on.

This was when James gave Teresa a warning, saying how someone was out to get her.

The series then ended with fans being left in suspense as to who this mysterious threat could be.

Is James Valdez back for good after surprise finale return?

James left not because he no longer cared for Teresa but because he wanted to protect her from the CIA.

His loyalty is also shown by the fact he clearly put his life in danger to give her the warning.

So this does indicate James is in it for the long haul and will return to being one of the main stars in season five.

The reason behind why the actor wasn’t in Queen of the South’s fourth series also shows his exit wasn’t intended as permanent.

Actor Peter Gadiot didn’t want to be part of the latest series of Queen of the South as he wanted to pay more attention to screenwriting as well as take a break from acting.

This was a planned break he had agreed with the creators of the show.

Showrunner Ben Lobato said to EW: “We wanted James to be in season four, but Peter had some other things that he wanted to explore creatively, so he went off and did that.

“What that was done, he came back around and told us he was available.

“We decided to get him back in and set him up for season five and let’s go.

“Things weren’t completely planned out this way, it was something that happened through the season.

“We’re so grateful that it did, and we’re so happy to have him back.”

Unfortunately, not all of the fans are as happy to see James return as Lobato.

Taking to Reddit, one fan commented: “Anyone else not want James to come back

“This might be an unpopular opinion but I thought season four was actually the best one yet!”

Another agreed: “James and Camila will always remain an important part of the story but it’s time to leave all that behind and carry on without them.”

But why exactly has James returned and what has he been up to during his time away?

Queen of the South is available to watch on Netflix.
