Regé-Jean Page, the smoldering breakout star of Netflix’s Bridgerton, will not return to the series for its second season—a decision surely breaking hearts and sparking confusion all across the ton.

Netflix announced the news in a statement on the official Bridgerton Instagram account, where a note from Lady Whistledown said the show would “bid adieu” to Page as the story shifts its focus to Lord Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) and his muttonchops on their quest to find love. The first season focused on Page’s Simon Basset, a.k.a. the Duke of Hastings, and Phoebe Dynevor’s Daphne Bridgerton, Anthony’s younger sister.

The narrative of the series is expected to follow that of Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton novels, which focus on a different sibling of the Bridgerton family in each book. Past reports hinted that Page and Dynevor could continue to appear in the series together, at least as supporting characters as Simon and Daphne continue to grow their relationship, which makes today’s news, that Page will not appear in the second season at all, a total shock. Dynevor, however, will still reprise her role as Daphne.

Page addressed his exit on Twitter, writing, “Pleasure and a privilege! An honour to be a member of the family – on and off screen, cast, crew and incredible fans – the love is real and will just keep growing.”
