Good Morning Britain’s audience was shocked on Tuesday when presenter Richard Madeley used a derogatory term to describe a cleaner working around Downing Street. Several fans took to Twitter to complain about the remark, with many finding the insult especially offensive considering Britain’s current cost of living crisis.
GMB presenter Richard enraged viewers on Tuesday when he described a Downing Street cleaner as a “flunky”.
After his co-star Louisa James’ report from Number 10, ITV cut back to Richard laughing at the image of someone cleaning the front door amid the political chaos of the past week.
“I thought the image of Louisa as she was there live on camera describing the sinking of the government ship,” he said.
“The guy polishing the front door, the flunky polishing the front door behind her of Number 10.”
“That was so analogous to the deck chairs being rearranged on the deck of the Titanic. Who cares if the doors are shiny? It’s the least important thing of the day!”
The word is often employed as a derogatory term for a manservant or someone who performs menial tasks for their employers.
Many were appalled by the comment, and have flocked to Twitter to call out Richard’s insulting vocabulary.
Mick Hansekowitsch said: “Richard Madeley on GMB has just called a man a ‘flunky’ live on air.”
“He seemed to think it amusing that a ‘flunky’ was cleaning the front door of Number 10.
“That ‘flunky’ is just a man trying to earn a living, struggling to make a living and that pompous a**e calls him a ‘flunky’.”
Mike Phillips wrote: “#GMB don’t call the guy polishing the door a flunky, it’s just a fella doing his job.”
@SteveMacpompey tweeted: “@GMB Madeley just called the guy cleaning Number 10’s front door, a ‘flunky’. Who the hell does he think he is!”

“Insulting that Richard M refers to housekeeping staff as a flunky,” @flikster said.
“Shining 10 Downing Street’s door may seem irrelevant but that person is doing their job well, unlike the PM.”
“‘Flunky’ Richard… Do you mean a person respectfully doing their job?” Duncan Johnston asked.
“The person cleaning the door of Number 10 didn’t ask to be on TV and pretty sure they are not getting paid as much as you. An apology required and expected!”
Downing Street is currently facing even more scrutiny following the latest government U-turns from Prime Minister Liz Truss and new Chancellor Jeremy Hunt.
