From buying second-hand furniture to sprucing up existing fittings, Scarlette Douglas and her brother Stuart have been sharing their best tips and tricks for renovating new homes and increasing their value in the process. In their new series on Channel 4, The Worst House on the Street, the A Place in the Sun star and her sibling have exposed some stunningly simple tricks to increase a house’s value.
Applying some simple exterior changes could raise a property’s value by up to £10,000.
Former A Place in the Sun presenter Scarlette has teamed up with her brother for a new property show which reveals how property owners can renovate their homes for less.
In this week’s episode of The Worst House on the Street, Scarlette and Stuart were in the Wirral to help out single mum Paula with her new home.
The fixer-upper required a new bathroom, some considerable work on the garden and even a new floor to stop water from leaking into the house.
Thankfully, the sibling duo were on hand to provide some simply renovation tips which would also dramatically improve the eventual selling price of the Merseyside property.
Stuart first surprised Paula’s family by revealing the colour of their front door could have a huge effect on their home’s market price.
When Paula’s son suggested a dark blue door, Stuart agreed: “Great suggestion, Freddy!
“Going for a dark blue door can add up to £4,000 to the value of your house.”
Paula initially wanted a statement pink door at the entrance of their new home, which hadn’t been renovated for nearly half a century.
However, Stuart insisted a darker colour would be much more preferable to potential buyers when the house is put back on the market.
Later, Scarlette tried to persuade Paula to remove the pebbledash coating from the outside of the property.
Also known as roughcasting, the home-design fad was once popular but can now decrease the value of a property significantly.

“Untreated pebble dash is an eyesore,” Scarlette explained. “Today’s homebuyers crave simplicity.
“People want a clean, bright finish with clear lines and bold colours. Multi-layered finishes are also bang-on-trend, using a variety of materials to perfect the look you want.
“Unsightly-looking pebbledash can mean losing up to 15 percent of the potential house value.”
Although removing the coating was a little more costly than painting the front door, the simple design change was a crucial factor in the final price estimate for the house.
Starting off with a budget of £20,000, Paula managed to make her house a home for just over £36,000, admitting the extra cost was well worth it.
Scarlette also confirmed estate agents have now valued her house at £317,000, an impressive profit of £78,000.
Paula couldn’t help shedding a tear as she thanked Scarlette and Stuart, as well as her ex-builder dad Stan, for all their help.
The Worst House on the Street airs Tuesdays at 8pm on Channel 4.
