For those who aren’t familiar, here’s a quick summary: Schitt’s Creek is about the Rose family who, following an unfortunate incident, have found themselves without a home or the means to uphold their lavish lifestyle. They’re reminded of a small town that was purchased as a joke many years back, and they go there in order to sell it and, presumably, return to their regular lives.
However, things don’t go exactly as planned. Foiled by the town’s mayor, Roland Schitt (Chris Elliott), the Roses end up staying in Schitt’s Creek a lot longer than they bargained for — and, in turn, begin to learn a lot more about themselves.
The show is in its fifth season
A lot has happened over the course of the series. (If you plan to watch at some point, feel free to jump ahead to the next section.) Johnny (Eugene Levy, the American Pie franchise) was originally set on selling the town and getting out, but has now found a business opportunity within Schitt’s Creek. Meanwhile, his actress wife, Moira (Catherine O’Hara, Home Alone), finds herself getting involved in the community, holding down a position on city council and singing in a women’s choir.
Their adult children, David and Alexis, accompany them to Schitt’s Creek, having never really earned money on their own. Both begin to flourish, with Alexis (newcomer Annie Murphy) going to college, working at a veterinarian’s office, and starting her own company. David (Dan Levy, Eugene’s actual son), who had a previous life in the world of art, opens up a store in town, and enters into a meaningful relationship. All of them have come a long way since the first season.
On March 21, 2019, Dan Levy shared an announcement on Twitter. The message came from both he and his father, who are also the creators of Schitt’s Creek. The Levys gave both good and bad news: The show, which will wrap up its 14-episode fifth season in April, has been renewed for a sixth season. Sadly, that sixth season will be the last one.
Despite fan’s reactions, the Levys see this as a positive. They declare that it was their choice to end the show with six seasons, calling it “a rare privilege” that they were able to end Schitt’s Creek the way they had hoped to from the beginning. They also took the time to thank audiences for their “overwhelming love and generosity.”
How to watch Schitt’s Creek
If you’re intrigued, there’s still plenty of time to catch up on Schitt’s Creek. The first four seasons of the show are on Netflix in U.S. Season 5 is likely to land on the streaming service as well, though that may not be until Season 6 begins airing. Thus far, all of the seasons have premiered in January, so we expect the first episode of Season 6 to air sometime in Jan. 2020, if all goes well.
