As Seann Walsh heads into the I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! jungle, his decision to sign up for the hit TV series has been branded "brave" .
Seann, 36, will make his show debut in Wednesday night's episode, and has already stated that he hopes the programmewill change people’s perception of him.
His decision to go on I'm A Celeb comes after the comedian caused a stir during his stint on Strictly Come Dancing in 2018, when he hit headlines for kissing his then-married partner Katya Jones.
Seann himself was also in a serious relationship at the time, which came to an end – alongside Katya’s marriage – as a result of their kiss.
Discussing Seann's career in the run up to Strictly, PR specialist and talent managerCarla Speight explained to OK!: “Seann’s rise to fame was phenomenal and all due to his talent as a stand up comedian.
"It took him just three years to go from doing a comedy workshop in 2009 to appearing on massive comedy shows like Mock The Week in 2009, and Live At The Apollo in 2011.”
She went on: “He has a way of turning traumatic moments in his life, of which there’s been many, into a heart wrenching and hilarious stand up show, taking the audience on a journey with him that leaves you wanting to both hug him and congratulate him for such an outstanding comedy.”
But following his Strictly romance with Katya, Seann’s reputation was “left in ruins”.
“He’s felt the brunt of public backlash for four years over a consensual drunk kiss that at some point everyone has done and lived to regret it, but none more than Seann,” said Carla.
“Katya in comparison didn’t receive half of the backlash and her career still continues largely unharmed, despite her mutual input into the scandal. But since then, Seann became incredibly unwell.
“His mental health crashed and he has openly talked about having PTSD and panic attacks as a result of the scandal. His career flatlined for a while, which gave him the chance to recover mentally. He doesn’t drink, he’s had therapy and in his new relationship, he seems really happy.”
Now, in a bid to further his career, Seann has joined the likes of Mike Tindall, Boy George and Jill Scott in the I’m A Celeb jungle.
While Carla labelled newcomer Matt Hancock's decision to go on the show as “a PR disaster”, she claimed that “it’s going to do Seann's career the world of good”.
“The majority of public opinion will be swayed by who he is thanks to how exposed he is in there,” explained Carla.
“I’m sure he will work to raise the morale of the group and will take any of the upcoming challenges stoically, though I do expect to hear the odd scream and for each one of the challenges that he endures to be hilarious viewing. Sure there will be some that don’t change their minds, but like he said in his VT, he’d be happy if people thought ‘he’s only a bit of a prat’.”
She went on: “It’s a brave move, but it’s a good one as things can’t get worse for him. He stands a chance at building his fan base, adding to the many existing loyal fans that sell out his shows and have loyally supported him over the years. It provides him opportunities to get back on our screens where he belongs, both acting and doing comedy.”
