See Uplifting New 'We Are Freestyle Love Supreme' Doc Trailer

“This was before Hamilton; Heights doesn’t happen if it isn’t for this,” actor Christopher Jackson says in the trailer for the new We Are Freestyle Love Supreme documentary trailer. “It’s a nucleus of a lot of that creative energy.”

Filmmaker Andrew Fried’s doc about the relentlessly upbeat improv hip-hop group premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and it debuts on Hulu on June 5th. The new teaser gives more of a glimpse of the footage he’s been shooting since the guys — including  Lin-Manuel Miranda, Christopher Jackson, Anthony Veneziale and Thomas Kail — began beatboxing and rapping together in tiny New York City basement venues in 2005.

It may be bittersweet to see the fun go down (and Miranda’s many hairstyle choices over the past 15 years) while live theater productions are canceled around the globe, but it’s also a reminder of why we yearn for these collective cultural experiences. As another member explains: FLS is about “finding the joy in the things we know how to do and turning them into a show.”

“A lot of the people in Freestyle Love Supreme are shaping what the American theater looks like now,” co-creator and Anthony Veneziale (a.k.a. Two-Touch) says at another point. It’s that sort of uplifting reminder that so many around the globe are in search of right now.
