Southern Charm is absolutely no stranger to drama amongst its cast — that’s basically the point of the show, right? And that’s fine, but there’s one kind of drama that the show’s been experiencing too much of. Southern Charm has had to deal with not one, but two cast members accused of sexual assault in the last couple of years.
Fans may be familiar with Thomas Ravenel’s ongoing situation with former nanny Dawn Ledwell, but they might not be as familiar with the accusations against J.D. Madison — and the subsequent fallout.
The accuser’s claim
In 2017, a woman named Susan Johnson filed a report against J.D. Madison, claiming that he had sexually assaulted her after a night out with some friends. Johnson claims that she gathered with friends as well as the Southern Charm star at her apartment.
Johnson claims that, as the night progressed, J.D. Madison intentionally knocked her glass over, breaking on the floor. She goes on to say that as she cleaned up the mess, Madison drugged her drink, which was already prepared on a nearby counter. Johnson goes on to say that after she finished her drink, the group went out to a bar, and she started to feel not right, slipping in and out of consciousness.
According to the police report, “This is when she stated that she felt like she might have been drugged.” Johnson says woke up in the guest bedroom of her home later that night to discover Madison “forcibly raping and sodomizing her,” and that the attack continued until Madison received a call from his wife.
Charged with filing a false report
However, in a turnaround that had many onlookers surprised, the police ended up charging Susan Johnson with filing a false report against the Southern Charm star.
Susan Johnson’s lawyer spoke out against the charge, saying that, “Susan is going to fight this unfair, unfounded charge. She was severely intoxicated on the night in question and so naturally there are some inconsistencies in her recollection. Such inconsistencies do not make her a liar, and they certainly do not make her a criminal.”
People acquired the arrest warrant affidavit for Susan Johnson, which read, “Johnson then expressed to her friend (female witness) that if they stick together that they stand a chance to make money and in a separate text the suspect referred to talking to an attorney and going for big bucks.”
Detective Daniel Neese of the Mount Pleasant Police Department seems to believe that Johnson was hoping to make money off the accusation and that this indicates her accusation is false.
J.D. Madison isn’t the only one
While J.D. Madison may be the most recently accused, he certainly isn’t the only Southern Charm cast member to face allegations of sexual assault. In fact, none other than disgraced politician Thomas Ravenel has faced two such accusations so far.
The former Southern Charm star was accused by his children’s former nanny, Dawn Ledwell, of sexually assaulting her in the nanny room of his home.
Ledwell claims that Ravenel “approached [her] without any hesitation and attempted to kiss [her].” Ledwell adds, “It escalated from there where he wouldn’t take no for an answer. Although it wasn’t penile penetration, what he did do was identified by the law as first-degree forcible rape.”
Ravenel has since been arrested on charges of second-degree assault and battery and is still facing the charges in court.
