It’s a miserable Valentine’s week for Marcus (Darcy Grey) and Ethan (Emile John) in Emmerdale as there’s a shock twist ahead – they go from love’s young dream preparing to buy a house to Heartbreak Hotel in the blink of an eye.
How can this be?! They’ve seemed to be rock solid of late, with Ethan all but throwing away his career to stand up for his lover, and the couple deciding it’s time to start settling down together. The thought of them breaking up is devastating news, but that’s what dark secrets can do.
The pair have a date night but it’s a total flop and Marcus is left feeling deflated with the lack of romance or urgency to find their own place. He’s frustrated that Ethan is dragging his heels and wonders if it means he’s having cold feet. Hating to see him looking so low, Naomi (Karene Peter) drags him out for a night away.
Ethan later makes things right by reassuring Marcus he has every intention of finding their own home and the smile is firmly back on Marcus’ face. These things take time and there’s no need to rush to find their perfect abode.
But this reassurance from Ethan is just a mask as it seems he is up to no good. He receives a message from a mystery man behind Marcus’ back, who is oblivious to Ethan’s clandestine behaviour.
The secret doesn’t stay secret for long though; Marcus experiences the worst nightmare of any loved-up person when he witnesses Ethan climb into a stranger’s car.
Marcus is devastated and can’t sit on what he’s seen, confronting Ethan at the first chance he gets. While Ethan tries to explain himself, Marcus isn’t prepared to listen to any lies, and it looks like this beautiful romance has run its course.
