The international streaming hit pits hundred of debt-ridden contestants against each other in a terrifying series of children’s games. Despite its horrific premise, Squid Game has topped the Netflix charts since its release in September and the South Korean series has officially become the platform’s biggest launch ever.
The debut season has raked in 111 million views in just under a month.
Romantic period drama Bridgerton held the record previously, having acquired 82 million fans in its first 28 days.
Netflix has not released detailed viewing times, but considers a single view as someone who tunes in for more than two minutes of a single episode.
It claims the amount of time is “long enough to indicate the choice was intentional”.
The streaming service announced on Twitter: “Squid Game has officially reached 111 million fans – making it our biggest series launch ever!”
The acclaimed Korean-drama has also shot to the top of the streamer’s charts across the globe.
Hwang Dong-hyuk’s dystopian drama has remained in the top ten in approximately 94 countries since its September 17 launch.
It has also become the first Korean-language series to take the number one spot in the US.
Lee Jung-jae and Park Hae-soo star as friends living on the brink of poverty who are recruited to take part in a series of games for a chance of winning a massive cash prize.
Once they arrive, they soon realise losing the games comes with a heavy cost; their lives.
The series’ thrilling narrative and sharp critiques of late capitalism has made Squid Game a smash hit with Netflix subscribers.
Although an English-language dub is available, the show has become one of the biggest subtitled dramas of all time.

Squid Game’s arrival follows a recent rise in the popularity of South Korean media across Western territories.
Pop groups such as BTS have taken the US by storm, and Bong Joon-ho’s 2019 social thriller Parasite became the first Korean-language film to win Best Picture at the Oscars.
Netflix have also been producing their own South Korean original shows since 2017, with more projects in the pipeline.
The streamer has also committed to releasing more international films and television shows in recent years.
Their French crime-drama Lupin is the platform’s third most-watched series debut.
Millions of fans are also still awaiting the final instalment of Spanish hit Money Heist.
Moreover, the world’s most popular streamer has announced they’ll be spending $500 million this year alone on South Korean films and TV.
It’s still unclear whether or not Hwang Dong-hyuk will return for a second season, but fans are certainly keen for the world of Squid Game to expand.
