A new Netflix documentary called Sins of Our Mother has been released on the streaming platform that details the story of doomsday 'cult mom' Lori Vallow and the murder of her two children.
The documentary examines how the 'cult mom' spiralled downward into religious fanaticism and paranoia to find herself and her fifth husband, Chad Daybell, standing trial for the murder of her two children.
Sins of Our Mother is a three-part series that presents first-hand accounts from the people closest to both the victims and the alleged perpetrators as they seek to learn the truth behind the tragedy.
But what happened to Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell? Here's everything you need to know.
Who are Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell?
Lori and her husband Chad hit headlines in 2019 after her children, Tylee Ryan aged 16 and Joshua "JJ" Vallow aged 7, vanished.
The couple never reported the children as missing and jetted off on holiday to Hawaii soon after investigators questioned them about their children.
Lori was raised as a Mormon and in 2018, she met Chad who was the leader of a radical Mormon sect that was preparing for the end times.
Lori believed she was able to communicate with angels and that the end of the world would take place in July 2020.
Since the children went missing, Lori's family have accused the 48-year-old hairdresser of being a part of a 'doomsday cult' with her husband Chad.
What is a doomsday cult?
A doomsday cult is a religious movement whose members believe that an apocalyptic event will soon occur.
Lori's family accused the couple of being a part of the cult, with Lori later connected to the mysterious deaths of three other people – including her brother Alex Cox.
Lori and Chad initially met after attending an event put on by Preparing A People, a cult focusing on the second coming of Christ and the end days.
The couple believed they were part of God’s “chosen 144,000”, who would see the world into the New Millennium on July 22, 2020.
What happened to Tylee and Joshua Vallow?
Tylee and JJ reportedly went missing in September 2019, however, their disappearance was not reported to the police until months later.
JJ enrolled at Kennedy Elementary School on September 3, 2019, but was later "unenrolled" after his mother claimed she was teaching him at home.
JJ's sister Tylee was last seen in Yellowstone Park on September 8 as she enjoyed a family trip with her mum and uncle Alex Cox.
The two children reportedly vanished in September 2019 and the Lori was then arrested in Hawaii in February 2020 after she failed to produce proof of life for her missing children to officers at Madison County Prosecutor's Office in January.
The 48-year-old mother initially told the police that her children were staying with a family friend in Arizona when cops conducted a welfare check at their family home November 26, 2019.
Detectives later discovered the the mother had lied as they found that Lori and Chad had "abruptly vacated their home" when cops returned to question them the next day.
In February, 'unearthed' surveillance footage appeared to show the children's mother dumping their belongings at a storage facility the year prior, which was around the time Lori and Chad fled to Hawaii.
Idaho authorities stated at the time that there was no sign that the two children ever made it to Hawaii.
Tylee and JJ's "charred" remains were then found wrapped in bags and buried in a pet cemetery at Chad's property, a court heard.
Tylee was burned and dismembered before being buried just days before her 17th birthday, it is claimed.
JJ’s body was wrapped in duct tape and plastic and buried on September 22, according to investigators.
Detectives then found the children's remains at the home on June 9, 2020.
Where are Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell now?
Lori and Chad are currently incarcerated awaiting trial, which will reportedly take place in January 2023.
The couple are both charged with first-degree murder of the two children and they could face the death penalty if convicted.
Lori's husband is also charged with the 2019 murder of his former wife, Tammy Daybell, who died under "suspicious circumstances".
The 54-year-old has since pleaded not guilty to the charges against him and is being held without bail while he awaits trial.
Last year, a judge ruled that Lori was not competent to stand trial as she was in a state mental facility.
The judge decided that the 48-year-old would spend another 180 days in the facility ahead of the pending trial.
